POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Scenes from a wild and busy July. A few great records were made, symphony gigs and surf post sessions, and a little hangin with puppies and friends. Even a soccer game (wonders never cease).
Looking forward to a slightly more chill August. Holler if ya need instruments played, songs produced, fish caught, or coffee drank. I’ll be around til further notice! by @johndshaw

I’m bad at posting so this is super late, but last weekend I got the privilege of filling in with the Dolly Parton Threads: My Songs in Symphony show on acoustic guitar, mandolin, and banjo for their dates with the Charlotte symphony.
It was an incredibly enjoyable opportunity to play music in a setting I’d always wanted to and never done, and I got to meet and work with some phenomenal folks playing some of the coolest arrangements imaginable of truly iconic material. Thanks to @deanberner for the chance to keep your seat warm, and to @dhamiltonmusic and @derekdrye for your stellar musical leadership and warm reception. And to all the other great vocalists, players and crew ( @holliehammel @katelyndrye @blairlamb @lbmiller83 @luke_woodle @grvmeister @thekatiebasden @dustinknock ) for welcoming me in so sweetly. by @johndshaw

I’m a life long Allman Brothers fan. I have loved this band since the second my uncle Dennis played me “At Fillmore East” shortly after I started playing guitar.
So much about my electric guitar playing is informed by the guidebook that was their music. As a kid, I chased down every board tape and other recording I could find from the Duane era and learned it all note for note. Same song, 42 different solos. I can still play most of em for ya on demand. I cut my teeth playing in bands and in our spare bedrooms with @scott_m_henry trying to figure out those tunes and licks.

When I first saw Duane’s guitars in the rock and roll hall of fame at age 16, I just stood there the whole time. I cried. The gravity of those being the guitars that made the notes I heard every day of my musical formation was overwhelming. I’d go back every time I was in Cleveland while they were there. Often buying a ticket just to stare at them behind glass for an hour.

When I first started playing professionally in Nashville, it was slide guitar that got me in a lot of doors. Informed by Duane and his musical legacy. At the time, it was the thing I could do that made me stand out. It got me in rooms I was under qualified for by traditional standards. It let me do things I always dreamed of.

I always hoped I would get to hold one of Duane’s guitars one day. But never realistically thought it might happen.

After some back channel correspondence to convince the custodians of this instrument I was a huge fan, a professional, and trustworthy, I got to spend a few minutes with Duane’s goldtop this morning. In the bedroom he occupied for most of his time with the band. This is the guitar that he finished his session career with, played on most of the Derek and the Dominos “Layla and other assorted love songs” record, and was playing as the Allman Brothers Band formed.
I gasped, nearly teared up all over again, played “Soul Serenade” by King Curtis on it as a tribute, and whispered a thank you to Duane for changing my life with the music he left the world.
Truly a monumental day. Still overwhelmed. by @johndshaw

Almost 11 full years ago I walked into @katie_fite ‘s house to pick her up for our second date and was warned “this is Dolly. She’s kinda shy with men at first”. But she wasn’t shy with me and we bonded immediately. (Picture from shortly after above)

For 11 of her 14 years, I knew this wonderful pup and loved her to pieces. There were times in that stretch where Katie and I parted ways for a bit, and each time we reunited she’d accuse me of only coming back because I missed the dog(s). Well, that wasn’t the only reason, but it was always a sweet reunion when I saw this pup (and later, Porter too) again.

Dolly’s goodbye came this morning after her health started to decline around thanksgiving, and then plummeted after Christmas. I like to think she wanted to see us finally get married and get thru one more holiday season. I could almost hear her say today “you did it, dumb dumbs. My work here is finished”.

Early January hasn’t been kind over the years, and the grief that visited us today with her loss is hard to digest.

Her last couple of weeks were tough to endure, but as our vet said “think of those good memories you can cherish”. There were plenty of those over 11 years. As Katie said today “we really all grew up together, didn’t we?”

She loved a boat ride
She loved her gingerbread man toy
She loved the lake
She loved to pretend to not eat to con you into giving her some wet food
She loved to look out the window from “her spot” on the couch
She loved to knock on the door if it was between her and her people.
She loved a walk
And most of all. She loved us. And we loved her right back.

Love you, Doll. Miss you. 💔 by @johndshaw

Man. What. A year.

I recognize this is a highlight reel. And this year had its low lows too.

But I got to play music with my friends for a living, build a new studio, meet some heroes, watch some baseball, travel, get married, do a hall of fame spotlight, and produce and play on a pile of great records. I’m blessed to be here and blessed to be a part of wonderful things. Thankful for everyone that is a part of making my life and career so lovely.

Cheers to 2025, y’all! by @johndshaw

Life is made of seasons. The last 5 years at my studio dubbed “Nashville West” in Kingston Springs were incredible. I made a ton of great music and grew so much as a musician and producer. The first notes played in there were preproduction for @bryan_loweree ‘s EP1 with @jdothallinc and @nickolasblazina and the last notes tracked in that studio were alone, cutting utility instruments for @briankelley ‘s upcoming “Put Myself On”. In between were around 700 songs with friends new and old.

This place sustained me thru the awfulness of the pandemic, and gave me solace from a burnout I was feeling from the growth of Nashville.
Emerson said “In the woods we return to reason and faith” and I believe that to be true. There I found my inspiration and joy again.

But all things must pass, and it’s time to come back to town.

For the last month or two I’ve been “moving in silence” to build out a new location in Nashville proper which I’ll be dubbing “bel suono terreno”. We are up and running as of last night and I can’t wait to make music with you all here, or remotely from here! by @johndshaw

My three favorite places. The guitar chair, the stage, and the producer chair. Got to spend a lot of time in all three this year and couldn’t be more thankful. For the artists, musical directors, and producers who have trusted me with your music: thank you. I’m so grateful for you. I love creating and making music together. I’m still overjoyed at the end of every month paying my bills with “music money” and never take it for granted.
To my friends who support me mentally, spiritually, and by recommendation on this journey: I couldn’t do it without you.
And to the companies who support and maintain my gear needs : @prsguitars @wamplerpedals @sitstrings @revvamps @paigemusical @gatorcases : I appreciate everything you do for me and always feel like I’m in great hands with your products and customer service.

Let’s make some great and joyful noise in 2024, y’all! by @johndshaw

It’s tough to put into words how wonderful this UK trip was for the soul. These shows and these people, the sights and sounds, the food and drink, all brought me such deep joy.

1. Union Chapel, London
2. Last pint at Sherlock Holmes pub, London
3. Last night in London 📷: @davejac79
4. Randomly started playing “Tennessee Waltz” in Union Chapel (clearly before tuning ha!) and @anthonyolympia very candidly captured it. A pure moment.
5. A solo stroll on the Thames and the London Eye
6. Views of Manchester
7. Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow, a bucket list venue
8. Sunset in Glasgow
9. Long Road Festival
10. The palace and gardens
