Rational Youth - City of Light
12” x 2, 1983, Holland & Canada

Time for one more RY synthpop classic - and the original Canadian sleeve vs a Dutch variation on Rams Horn Rec

Their sound came out of the very early-’80s electronic/new-wave world: synthesizers, sequencers, vocoder, drum machines and relatively sparse arrangements rather than the big, polished synth-pop sound that became dominant a bit later and that’s exactly what’s particularly appealing about Rational Youth to me; that they don’t sound like they’re trying to imitate the British synth-pop groups of the period 👌🏻

John Foxx - My Face
Oct. 2-15 1980, UK

Today (2 Oct) ) this marvellous track was released back in 1980. 🥳🎉
Yellow flexi single of a non-album track that came free with UK magazine Smash Hits.

My Face was however included on the Canadian-only compilation called ‘John Foxx’ that came out in ‘81. Since then it has appeared on a few more cd comps. A splendid track!🎹🎹🎹

John Foxx - The Golden Section
LP, Virgin, 1983, Hong Kong & Japan

Saturday 26/9 was John’s birthday AND the release day for his third album.ø back in 1983.
Took me a while to really appreciate this but now it sits formly rooted along with the others 🎹

Shown above are an interesting Japanese white label and a scarce, rather desaturated, Hong Kong issue with a wonderful unique obi.

The Klinik - Plague
LP, Antler, 1987, Belgium

Released today 25/9 ‘87 🥳
I would consider this one of the key records of the industrial / EBM scene from the late 1980s. It’s a particularly stark example of the raw electronic sound that made The Klinik so influential.
Highly recommended 🎹⚙️🎹

John Foxx - The Garden
LP, Virgin, 1981

Released today 25 September 1981, it was Foxx’s second solo album, following Metamatic. It reached No. 24 in the UK Albums Chart, and its first single, “Europe After the Rain,” reached No. 40.
Foxx himself described the transition from Metamatic as moving away from being a “frozen electrician” and toward a more organic, psychedelic atmosphere.
The Garden also brings in a proper band, including Robin Simon, Foxx’s former Ultravox colleague, whose guitar is crucial to the album’s character. Foxx later said that he wanted to return to the territory of Systems of Romance and specifically wanted to work with Simon again. - and it just works so well.
A marvellous album to this day.

Pictured are a few of the album pressings (Japan, Mexico, Canada and the initial UK issue with the limited ‘book’ Church)

The Canadian issue is especially interesting with its alternate artwork and different track order and also uniquely includes This Jungle (b-side to Europe After the Rain)

Delerium - Morpheus
LP, Dossier, 1989, Germany

Leeb and Fulber of Front Line Assembly fame, released their 2nd Delerium album in the summer of 1989 which places Morpheus in a much darker, industrial-influenced direction, as it was a few years before they unlocked the later ‘etheral’ success receipe ☺️

Here’s the ltd clear vinyl version that their first two albums were also released in.

Rational Youth - Saturdays in Silesia
12” x 2, 1982, Holland & Canada.

Pioneering act in Canadian synth-pop, the band was formed in Montreal in 1981 by Tracy Howe and Bill Vorn.
This is their signature track, an excellent fast-paced track backed with equally fabulous ext version of their French version of Pile ou Face.

Saturdays was their biggest claim to fame and if they hadn’t been from Canada but rather Europe, they would certainly have had a much wider success. They made the most wonderful debut album too; Cold War Nightlife that I highly recommend.
Pictured are the Dutch and Canadian pressings.

Skinny Puppy - VIVIsectVI
LP, Nettwerk, 1988, Canada

This fabulous album was released yesterday (12/9) back in 1988, when Skinny Puppy were still working as the classic trio of Nivek Ogre, cEvin Key, and Dwayne Goettel. (with Rave on the side as engineer) - what an album!
Clearly remember seeing it hanging in the local record shop window among the new releases, in those days you never really knew when much was released before you were looking at it in the shops, wonderful surprises, I do miss that a bit.

Ultravox - Rage in Eden - 1981

Happy birthday (11/9 1981) to this fabulous album here shown in various issues.

The band went into Conny Plank’s remote countryside studio near Cologne with almost nothing and essentially built the album from scratch on site over about three months.
In contrast, the Vienna album was recorded in just three weeks the year before.
- both albums reached no 4 in the UK charts.

To me RIE stands out in their otherwise excellent catalogue as one of their most complete albums from start to finish, unified and a solid body of connected tracks.
