“The Powerlines.” Over one hundred miles of austere marching across the expanses of the Mojave. From Yermo, CA to Primm, NV, you touch no pavement and are reduced to but a being in the desert at the hands of a hostile world. In the day, cool and still air fights the assaulting sun. The mind fights the body, faced with the vision of distances to be run that stretch to the horizon. But the real challenge of the desert comes not in the heat of the day, but in the night.

When the sun goes down, all senses of space and time evaporate. Awareness is reduced to the few-foot range of a headlamp, and the stars are the only reprieve from the endless void that takes over. Once the sun is down and the void takes over, the violence begins.

Wind that shakes cars and kicks up waves of dust rips across the landscape. Sand blasts every inch of exposed skin, shreds the eyes, and cuts through every layer of warmth. The rulers of the land emerge and scurry just out of sight, making ever clearer their superiority and ability to kill. Upon the tree branches, wedged in the crevasses, and lurking above, they watch, waiting for Johnny to expire.

No progress, no warmth, no stopping, Johnny drags himself across the wasteland.
