9/11 A Remembrance. Twenty. Five. Years.

9:59 AM, Sept. 11, 2001

We (who are old enough) remember exactly where we were when the Towers fell.

We remember the smoking gashes in the buildings, our eyes burrowing into them like doubting Thomas’ fingers probing Christ’s wound, unbelieving.

We remember the pancaking steel and cement and the confetti of once important documents fluttering in the rising plume of dust. An endless loop in our collective psyche.

And we remember strangers linked forever to us by the shared experience, faces turned upward in horror and disbelief, uncomprehending and refusing to accept what was unfolding right before our eyes.

In the aftermath, many of us reassessed. Me, I turned away from a life in pursuit of security, picked up my discarded brushes and dreams, and set off down the road not taken.

By summer 2002 the road led me to a little storefront studio and gallery in Provincetown where on Sept. 11th. I first hung this painting in my gallery window.

It hung in that window every September after and I unroll and hang it still, wherever I am on the anniversary.

For today’s #Artist365, meet one of the artists who makes Western Avenue special Johniene Papandreas, today from Studio 461.

We sense rather than ‘see’, is at the heart of artist Johniene Papandreas’ painting.

While she occasionally works from photos or living subjects, her models are often long-dead figures from classical art she lifts from the past and reincarnates. In the process, the clues that fix them in time and place and even gender are abandoned and, as the courtship between artist and subject progresses, unexpected hidden emotional lives are revealed…to the artist and to the modern viewer.

They might begin as 17th. century French sisters who morph into emotional Siamese twins, a Franciscan monk whose eyes reveal someone struggling with the dark and light of his soul, or details from a Dutch still-life containing mysterious and sensual micro-worlds.

Oh, and brace yourself…they’re REALLY big.

The paintings are created entirely by brush in casein, an old-world paint derived from milk protein. Johniene applies the casein layer by layer, in thin glazes that bond to specially prepared muslin to slowly build visual depth and dimension. The resulting painting is softly luminous and appears to glow from within even in the dimmest of light.

Summer is almost here! Days of bright sunshine and color, of making memories and celebrating life. BOUNTY was inspired by the special light of Provincetown, clambakes on the beach, and, of course, strolling Commercial Street with friends... its been brightening my studio and waiting all winter to find a new wall it can call home. A recent miniature "mock up" for one of my big layered works was kind of charming in small-scale and inspired me to revisit some of my other "layered triptychs". Here's the result! Gonna frame them up and see how they look... by @johnienepapandreas
