Dr. Leonard Kouba was a Geography Professor at Northern Illinois University, but more importantly one of the most passionate fisherman I have had the pleasure to be around. Lens passion took him to every continent of the world chasing everything from Mekong Catfish in Thailand to Goliath Tigerfish in the Congo.

Growing up, I would hear stories of Len and the amazing places he had fished or was planning to fish from my father, who was one of his graduate students and longtime friends. Len made me realize how much of an injustice not following ones passion is to oneself and motivated me to discover my own passions.

Len took one final trip to Thailand last year and then quietly passed away at his home in July at the age of 81. I was lucky enough to be handed down some of his fly rods and reels including his prized Tibor Everglades.

Yesterday I fished Lens outfit with Captain @johnnorville and had the most memorable fishing day of my life which ended with fighting an adult migrating tarpon for just under an hour. I know Len was with me yesterday, looking over my shoulder and making my leader land straight. While I doubt I will ever live up to the legend of Leonard Kouba, every cast I make will serve to honor his legacy. Mid - 50’s in Craig today. Doesn’t feel much like winter lately. The days are getting longer and calendars are filling up with prime dates already spoken for. All signs that spring is not far off.
