Last night I was lucky enough to see @katiesfet production of Till I Die, Clifford Odet’s brilliant play about a cell of communists organising underground against the Nazis.

The cast (especially @johnmarcismyfirstname 💕) brought out beautifully the dignity and often secret heroism of the generations of communists who spent their lives resisting fascism, doing it despite what it did to their personal lives and their aspirations of love and raising children. I was grateful to see put before an audience how difficult every small decision was for these people, the impossible binds they were forced into, how much they sacrificed and above all how right they were.

The play was banned when first performed in Australia in 1936 on request of the Nazi consulate, for criticism of a “friendly power”. As Katie pointed out, it’s an appropriate time to put on a banned play as we watch a new wave of censorship attempting to silence those who speak out for Palestine.

I saw it with good friends, lovely comrades, and Tanya, whose socialist dad named her after a young woman he read about in the communist press who was publicly executed for resisting the Nazis. Her dad was at the battle of cable street, and an organiser of hunger marches. He left school at 7 and was taught to read in his small mining town by the communist party. He broke with them when they betrayed the spanish revolution. The second photo is the two of us toasting him.

I hope it helped anyone who watched it to understand why many of us today are so dedicated to rebuilding the revolutionary socialist tradition, why we seem so fervent, why we insist on writing and selling a socialist newspaper, and above all why all of us need to fight against fascism, genocide and capitalism today. by @johnmarcismyfirstname

Visited @abcinsydney today to see @bravo.domino featured in all it's excellence. So wonderful to see your work getting the platform and spotlight it deserves 🫶🏾

12 years ago I was in this building auditioning for Play School. I came painfully close, but didn't get the gig. Being on Play School will always be the dream job and sitting with these icons while looking at Bravo's painting on the wall is a wonderful reminder to keep chasing ✨ taken in ABC Sydney by @johnmarcismyfirstname
