“I was inspired to explore the less-seen corners of LBI— the water towers, boatyards, and industrial landscapes. I live up the shore in Long Branch, so I live in a world of both natural beauty and gritty city. I’m drawn to strong shapes, patterns, and vibrant color as well as the feeling of a place that makes me stop and paint. Plein air painting forces me to work quickly, trust my instincts, and let go of small imperfections. I painted each piece entirely on location, from start to finish usually in a few hours. Vacationers passed by and looked over my shoulder each time I set up. Without fail, a mom would approach with a shy child in tow and say something like, ‘You see that? He’s an artist? Don’t you like to paint? Maybe you can do something like that too?’”

I packed a bag with neutral colors to paint the nude figure at a session in Asbury but was late getting out of the house after work. Instead I took whatever paint I had (blue/grey some brown, white and orange and black) and set up the easel in Allenhurst just as the sun was going down at 7:00. I could barely see, maybe that's a good thing! #enpleinairpainter by @johnmathiasart

The Fenwick Lighthouse. I painted for the Third summer in a row, this time in acrylic on a 30x15 canvas. Spent a couple of hours in the field and finished it up using the dresser in this rented beach house as a studio! (No messy oil stains to clean) those are little gravestones in the vacant field, the land I was parked and painting on is for sale taken in Fenwick Island, Delaware by @johnmathiasart
