As advanced as humans are compared to animals, wild animal babies are often much more independent than human babies. Take these cubs for example, likely 5-6 months old, full of curiosity, feeding themselves, always on the search for danger, and able to scurry up a tree in mere seconds. Maybe its because their life is shorter and more compacted than ours, maybe its because you have to be tough to survive out there in the wild. Whatever the reason, its amazing to see how quickly babies in nature adapt to their environment and form independence.

And yes, as independent as these two were, momma was only a few feet away, and keeping a very close eye. by @johnmauserphoto

A black bear cub keeps a weary eye as it hides among the shadows. Mid summer is bear cub season on the east coast, the food is plentiful, and their mothers are teaching them how to safely forage. We have a lot of amazing animals along the coast, but bears and bear cubs in particular are one of my favorite subjects to admire and photograph. by @johnmauserphoto

Yo ENC, welcome to my crib. Corn crib that is.

Bears can't resist the sweet taste and carb overload of a field full of fresh corn. This time of year, the corn is at its peak growth, while still being soft and easy to digest. Black bears take advantage of the free calories until the corn is harvested, knocking down stalks and shucking the ears before eating them. Some bears will even nap in the fields in between meals. While the bears love it, the farmers aren't too fond of the amount of damage a group of black bears can do to their crops. One black bear can consume 3-5 acres of corn in a season. A sow black bear tries to convince her cub that the tree is the place to be. Momma just wanted to go eat in peace while her cubs were in a safe place. Once she got them up the tree, she would move away and start to forage, only to have the cubs scurry down the tree to join her. Momma would stop eating, escort her cubs to the base of the tree again, and try to convince them to climb and stay. This cycle repeated itself three or four times before the sow gave up and joined them in the tree. by @johnmauserphoto

A pine woods tree frog sits atop a yellow pitcher plant late one evening in coastal NC. The sweet smell of the pitcher plants bring in a multitude of insects, and the frog is more than happy to take advantage of the situation. by @johnmauserphoto

I've made a promise to myself, to not take these animals for granted again. Seeing them eveyday, I lost sight of how special they were. Not just a feral animal living on an island, but a testament of the will to survive, and a living artifact of the nautical history of the Crystal Coast. I can't wait to get back out there and spend some time with them again.

A Shackleford Pony grazes on a bed of sea pickle, or Salicornia, a salt tolerant succulent that grows around the marsh. I've eaten sea pickle a few times, not my favorite but I'd take it over sea oats or cordgrass any day. by @johnmauserphoto
