It’s reported today that Sally Rooney, who many believe is one of the best authors of her generation, has been advised that because she has expressed support for Palestine Action, she could be arrested if she comes to the UK.

Because she is donating some of the money from the sale of her books to Palestine Action, her publishers have been advised that they too could be prosecuted if they sell her books in any form and so they have removed them from the bookshelves and other outlets.

I do not want anyone in the UK to miss out on her wonderful writing and so I thought I would read the first paragraphs of her terrific book “Normal People.”

I hope others will read further sections of the book so that people do not lose out on the joy of reading her works. by @johnmcdonnellmp

Today marks 1 year since @officialhackneyabbott was suspended from the Labour Party.

Andy Burnham should do the right thing and bring Diane back.

In the discussion on the review of benefit support for disabled people the Conservative shadow minister used the usual tactics of trying to divide people & stigmatise those claiming social security benefits. I called for this language to be put behind us once and for all. by @johnmcdonnellmp

This week I spoke at the @pcsunion demonstration at Parliament on behalf of my constituents who are retired civil servants & who have not had their pensions paid because the administration of their pensions has been outsourced to the private, profiteering Capita. by @johnmcdonnellmp

There has been near chaos since the payment of civil service pensions was outsourced - I call for the government to commit to returning the administration of civil service pensions to public control. by @johnmcdonnellmp

At the same time as the government has taken greater control over the setting of price levels for drugs purchased for the NHS, it has signed a trade deal with Trump that will allow more access to UK for profiteering Big Pharma. All without proper Parliamentary scrutiny & vote. by @johnmcdonnellmp

Israel is annexing the West Bank, destroying Palestinian communities & violently detaining anyone who seeks to resist. This month Israeli forces detained & imprisoned Dr Mazen Rantisi, known as the “ doctor of the poor.” I raised in Parliament his case to demand his release. by @johnmcdonnellmp

Labour needs to engage the whole party on an analysis & discussion of what has happened, why & what’s needed to turn this around. The leadership question will inevitably be on the agenda & there should be no precipitous coups but if the party decides there needs to be a leadership change then it must be an orderly democratic change with no blocks on candidates by @johnmcdonnellmp

"Heathrow has made the clear commitment that it will not pay for the infrastructure; landing charges will go up and passengers will pay for it; and there is no way that we can meet our climate change targets if the expansion goes ahead." by @johnmcdonnellmp
