It ain't big, but not long ago it was all lifeless astroturf (check the next pic). Now we get butterflies, sometimes frogs, and once a dragonfly! My greatest joy is being able to harvest fresh herbs for my morning tea - usually wormwood, gotu kola, dandelion, tulsi basil, mint and lemon balm. The downside of a small garden though is you can't pee in it every day, and we all know the happiness of a man is directly proportional to how many times in a day he can pee in the wild. The tea makes up for it 👌 taken in Observatory, Western Cape, South Africa by @johnmg51

I'm going to try and post one photo a week this year. I have never posted much because I myself am often so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of what's out there. But since every second thing on our feeds is now an ad or a quick-cut reel aimed at holding your attention, maybe my friends will be pleased to instead see a piece of my life or something that made me happy. I do enjoy seeing the same from you!

Antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, vitamin A, vitamin C and Vitamin Free! Nasturtium is easily the most abundant wild growing edible 'weed' in Cape Town. Pick some up on your way home next time.

More of the planty stuff coming, use it or don't use it 😜

Madeira vine is a bad invasive in South Africa and Australia, but you can also eat it as a spinach. Out here on the edge of the rainforest in remote northwest The Republic of Congo, they know that all too well, as the of the local village showed me.

After a hard day's work helping us clear space for our camp, he collected some to take home to his missus for the pot. "Bon pour la santé", he said proudly, and trundled off with his handful of green.

Wikipedia says of its nutrition:

"The leaves are rich in beta-carotene, vitamin E and calcium, in addition to having small amounts of riboflavin, folic acid, ascorbic acid, iron and protein. The leaves also contain mucilage."

Thanks to plant guru @claircreates for helping with the ID.

Foraging in Eshowe: some pics from a really fun tour, learning from my sister what and what not to eat from the roadside. Some plants are local, some are alien; but each comes with a story and a superpower, whether healthy or magical. Check out this month's @getawaymagazine for the story or get hold of Lizzie on Instagram @forest_at_51.

Thanks also to Cheryl and Bill for adding the culinary touch, Roger for the chaffeuring, and the jetlagged Americans for their gees!

Eshowe and Zululand is primed for exciting new eco-tourism opportunities such as this. Just another reason to say #NotoMining.

Fold mountains on top of Saach Pass in the Himalayas. Probably one of my favourite pics ever.

A couple of pics from a life-changing trip through the Himalayan regions of Ladakh and Kashmir.

August – October was spent on this babe of a bike called Pushkarini, with a tent and all my kit, and even my laptop to ensure I could carry on writing for petrol money. I was alone for most of it, and then joined by the fabulous @elliecoopermusic on her thunderous machine called Ullu. Some of the roads were so bad we couldn't have done it alone.

I have written an article about the trip which will be published in a US travel magazine later next year, but if anyone is interested I will be happy to share it privately.

Eternally grateful to India and the communities that grew during lockdown, for showing me life over the last 18 months like I have never known it before. Being back in SA now it feels like a lifetime ago, but I keep the experiences, the lessons and the people with me in my heart as I connect with my beautiful family and motherland again.

Sending love to all of you ❤

Behold the mighty Himalayas! Lordy, lordy, lordy, it was simply exhilirating to stand below them like this, out of breath and with an aching arse and calves, trying quench one's thirst with the fffffucking fffffreeezing glacial meltwater.

Got put to shame by one of our company, the son of a shepherd, who decided to scale that peak the next morning just for fun. by @johnmg51
