TONIGHT: JOHN BRENNAN TWO-DAY RESIDENCY, DAY TWO

For two nights, Vancouver percussionist and sound artist John Brennan brings six invited musicians from Canada, the UK and Europe to Cafe OTO for a residency built entirely through improvisation, spontaneous composition and changing ensemble formations.

Photos from Day one courtesy of @gray.goes.black

A founding member of free improv psych group EARTHBALL, Brennan’s practice is rooted in collaboration. His network has included Chris Corsano, Raven Chacon, Bill Orcutt, Andy Moor, John Dieterich and Victoria Shen, alongside several of the musicians gathered here. Rather than arriving as a fixed band, the residency puts existing relationships into contact with new ones, reorganising the players across trios, quartets, a duo and a quintet.

The personnel crosses some very different histories of improvised and underground music: Farida Amadou has developed a fiercely physical language for electric bass, working with Peter Brötzmann, Thurston Moore and Moor Mother. Mariam Rezaei is one of the most distinctive turntablists working today, manipulating samples, rhythm and noise in real time. Steve Beresford brings more than fifty years at the centre of British spontaneous music.

They are joined by Toronto based reed player Karen Ng, known through both improvised music and her work with The Weather Station, Andy Shauf and Do Make Say Think; Alexander Moskos of Drainolith and AIDS Wolf; and EarthBall and Shearing Pinx drummer, guitarist and vocalist Jeremy Van Wyck.

The point is the encounter itself. Two evenings in which combinations change and established collaborations meet for the first time in new formations.

🎟️ £17 advance / £12 members

BRENNAN/KUTIN
John Brennan and Peter Kutin's duo is a blast of free jazz, noise and pummelling sonics. Brennan is a drummer/improviser and founding member of Canadian psychedelic freeform ensemble EarthBall, and has collaborated with artists including Chris Corsano, Raven Chacon and John Dieterich. Kutin works across experimental music, electroacoustic sound, kinetic sculpture and film, and is a founding member of Ventil Records, Vienna’s Westbahnstudios, and the trio PLF with Elvin Brandhi and Lukas König. Their appearance at UH Fest marks their first festival performance as a duo.

This Saturday - Conduit Gallery will feature the improvisational magic of Modale @johnmoeb @justindalepattersonofficial tickets in BIO

Modale is the ongoing improvisational collaboration of John Brennan and Justin Patterson. Formed during the COVID-19 lockdown in Vancouver in 2020, the project grew out of regular recording sessions exploring improvisation through percussion, electronics, found objects, feedback, and acoustic instruments. Their recordings emerge through extended performance and are later shaped through editing and post-production.

Although working in different disciplines, Brennan and Patterson have each been active in Vancouver’s music and contemporary art communities for nearly two decades. Their collaboration reflects a shared interest in improvisation, materiality, and the relationship between sound, space, and time.

Together, Modale occupies the space between experimental music and contemporary art, using improvisation as a method for developing sound through collective attention, chance, and sustained collaboration. by @johnmoeb
