Back in the day things were different. My parents were teenagers when they had me hella young figurin life out doin the very best they could. My pops wasn’t handed anything. Started off as a delivery driver for a provider of logistics and operations services to military bases they handled overflow work for the aerospace industry just trying to make ends meet. But my dad he wasn’t the type to sit back. He saw an opportunity and jumped on it. One day someone in the art department asked him to help finish a project for extra cash the task was photo work. No experience no formal training just a willingness to learn. He never hesitated. Took a chance learned the process and never looked back. Neither him nor I knew it at the time but that moment planted a seed. He kept helpin out learnin more and before long he was developin negatives blowin up prints building a whole skill set from scratch. It was the ’80s no rules no masks no gloves. It was the dopest thing I’d ever seen. I remember those late nights watchin my dad work. The smell of chemicals in the darkroom the way he’d focus so intently on his craft. There was somethin magical about it watching him make these photos of planes appear like they were comin out of thin air. Watchin him make these images come to life. To this day some of my favorite memories.

I was just a kid but I couldn’t get enough of it. I wanted to be around him wanted to see the process learn everything he was doing. Just by watchin him he taught me about work ethic perseverance and never being afraid to start from the bottom and put in the work. He showed me that if you want somethin you gotta go get it. That hunger that hustle… this experience taught me how to dream and dream big. All that is what he passed down to me.

Now I get to pick up a camera to make a livin. I get to launch full scale campaigns for brands athletes and music artists and it all started with him. I know it’s all because of the foundation he laid. He wasn’t just my dad he was my first mentor my first inspiration. And even though he may not know it everything I’ve done everything I’m still chasin? It all started in that darkroom watchin him work…(caption cont.in comments) taken in Los Angeles, California by @johnnybarumedia

One of the hardest things to accept as a creative is that starin at the work longer doesn’t always make it better.

Sometimes you gotta close the timeline. Put the camera down.

Sometimes I need to hit a punchin bag. Play a game of soccer. Take a run. Play a hand of dominó. Start a fire. Cook somethin. Be around family. Take pictures just for me. Listen to music loud. Do somethin that has nothin to do with the work. Anything to clear my head. Mannnnn I miss boxing…I miss @jesussotokarass

Funny thing about creativity it usually finds YOU when you stop chasin it.

Because if all you do is create on command, eventually the work starts feelin like versions of watered down production. The curiosity fades.

I gotta remind myself:

Rest is part of the work.

Sometimes you gotta stop makin for a little while and go live enough life to have somethin worth makin again. #jefeactivo @cafecitoconjefas taken in Los Angeles, California by @johnnybarumedia

I’ve worked with musicians, athletes, business owners, nonprofits, and political campaigns.

And one thing I’ve learned is that everybody thinks they need a different kind of marketing.

But underneath it all, there’s a very similar challenge:

You have to give people a reason to care.

And then you have to give them a reason to believe.

There is a shift when people believe in the mission.

They don’t just support the big idea. People start believin in the small objectives that get you there.

They’ll stream the record because they believe in the artist.

They’ll buy the ticket because they believe in where that artist is headed.

They’ll support the athlete because they believe in the journey.

They’ll buy from the business because they believe in what the business is buildin.

They’ll donate to the nonprofit because they believe in the mission…not just the individual fundraiser.

When people genuinely believe in what you’re buildin…you don’t have to CONVINCE them to care about every little step. They understand that the little steps are part of somethin bigger.

That’s when you an audience becomes a group of people who are invested in your outcome.

And that’s a huge distinction in marketing.

My job isn’t strictly just to help you get attention.

It’s to help you communicate the mission clearly enough that people understand where we’re goin…why it matters…and why they should want to be part of gettin there.

Almost everything will continue to change and evolve. Tactics…the industry…creativity…but what remains constant is the psychology behind it all.

People ultimately support what they believe in.

When they believe in the mission…the small objectives become a lot easier to move. #jefeactivo #jefe @cafecitoconjefas taken in Los Angeles, California by @johnnybarumedia

The part people see might be the finished film…photo gallery…or marketing campaign. What they don’t always see is everything that happens before it.

The conversations…ideas…extensive plannin.
The little decisions that slowly turn somethin into a story. I think that’s why I’ve always felt more comfortable behind the camera. I like watchin. Listenin. Findin the moment. Figurin out what makes the story important.

Bein in front of the camera is a different story. I’m used to documentin the story…not bein in it. But a lot of how I approach my work comes from the same place.

I’ve spent years payin attention to how people communicate ideas how things are introduced…repeated…remembered…and eventually become part of how we see a person or a brand.

I don’t really think about one video…one photo…or one campaign by itself. I’m thinkin about the bigger picture. What are people goin to remember? What are they gonna feel? What story are all these little pieces tellin together. Takin scattered pieces and slowly givin them meaningful visuals. Still gettin used to bein on the other side of the camera though.

I’ve always been drawn to stories. A photograph can make somebody stop. A film can make somebody understand a person they’ve never met. A story can make somebody care about somethin they ignored or didn’t know existed five minutes earlier.

Over the years people have trusted me with tellin their stories and I think that’s one of the dopest things ever.

Music artists have trusted me to help tell their stories. Athletes have trusted me with campaigns. Agencies have trusted me to bring brand campaigns to life. Business owners have trusted me to create work that helps move their businesses forward. And nonprofits have used my visuals to help raise more than $1 million. Government officials have used my visuals to get elected and take office.

When a person puts their story…their brand…their business…or their mission in your hands…the job isn’t just to make somethin that looks good. It’s to understand what they’re buildin what they’re chasin or representin.

What are we tryinto say?
Who needs to hear it?
Why should they care?
And how do we tell it in a way they’ll remember?

That’s the part of storytellin that keeps me pushin. The camera is the tool. The real work is earnin the trust to tell the story.

My name is Johnny Barú. I’m a filmmaker, photographer and Creative Marketing Director based in Los Angeles. Through Johnny Barú Media, I help businesses, organizations and people turn what they do into stories people can connect to. My work involves strategy, filmmaking and campaign development. I’m usually looking for the story underneath the brand I lock in on…

The people.
The reason the work exists.
The struggle and process that created it.
The people it serves.
The thing that makes other people care.

Every brand deserves more than just content.
Sometimes it needs a better story.
That’s what I build.

Branded documentaries. Brand films. Creative direction. Campaign storytelling.

The final visuals are only part of the story. The real story lives in the moments between the shots the conversations, the sacrifices, the setbacks, and the wins. That’s why I love documentary storytelling.

I help athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs share the story behind the brand, because that’s what people remember.

Appreciate everyone who’s trusted me to tell a piece of theirs. taken in Los Angeles, California by @johnnybarumedia

You don’t always get the shot you came for or planned for. The plan changed in real time with this one. When we pulled up we learned we wouldn’t be able to document the ring walk in real time. So before sound check ended I asked one question ā€œHow can we shoot this in a way for people to still see and feel the performance.ā€ Then I pressed record.

That became the story. I’ve learned that documentary filmmaking shouldn’t force moments. Instead we should be able to recognize them. The work has taught me that storytelling isn’t about controlling the outcome but rather recognizing what matters in the moment you’re given. Here’s a small piece of that story. Grateful for @vanessalynnae9 for the access and for hiring me to shoot this. taken in Chumash Casino Resort by @johnnybarumedia

Most wellness content doesn’t always show what the actual treatment experience looks like. What I do is step into your space and document it through photography. Not staged moments, but real points in the process: acupuncture, cupping, Manuthera work, and everything in between. The moments most people are curious about but rarely get to see clearly.

I focus on capturing the details inside the treatment itself so there’s no guesswork about what happens when someone walks in.

People don’t commit to self-care when it feels unknown. They move forward when they can recognize the process, when they can see exactly what the care looks like in real time.

I work as a photographer within our agency @zuletaunltd who turns treatment into something people can actually see before they experience it. I’d be honored to document your process in order to showcase your work to your ideal clients + get them into your treatment room.

Reach out for more information on how we can create an intentional library of assets to support the growth of your business online.

Most healthcare content looks clean…but it doesn’t always show what’s actually happening. What I do is step into your world and document the process. Not just a polished version but instead what someone can expect when they book with you. I shoot the experience as it unfolds so it stays true to how you actually work. People don’t spend their hard earned money based on claims alone. They buy in when they understand the process when they can see what they’re actually stepping into, not just what they’re being promised. I work as a marketing director who turns clinical environments into proof of process, so clients know what to expect before they book and walk in. taken in Agoura Hills, California by @johnnybarumedia
