August 2015, I packed up a U-Haul and drove from Winston-Salem, NC to Tulsa, OK. 21 years old. Didn’t know a soul. A one year contract in a city I’d never seen. It was a risk that turns out to be one of the greatest decisions of my life. One year turned into two, and two quickly turned into eleven. And after eleven years, I believe this chapter of my life has come to a close.

I grew up here in ways I didn’t expect. I built relationships here. I found pieces of myself here. I created here. I taught here. I laughed here. I loved here. I got my heart broken here. I made mistakes here. I failed here. I succeeded here. I started over here. I lived here.

Winston-Salem will always be home. But Oklahoma became home too. And that’s what makes saying goodbye so tough.

I’m eternally grateful for the city of Tulsa & the state of Oklahoma. My time here has been nothing short of amazing. But when I think about eleven years, it isn’t the city or the state itself that made them special. It was the people.

The people I worked with. The students I taught. The people I created with. The people who became friends, family, mentors, colleagues and everything in between. The people reading this. You made my time here memorable.

I’m going back home. Not as the same person who left North Carolina eleven years ago, but as someone who will carry everything Oklahoma gave me wherever I go.

To the youth, your dreams are right in front of you. Sometimes you just have to be crazy enough to chase them. Be prepared for the pivots life will introduce you to, and when they arrive, attack them head on!

Eleven years ago, a 21 year old kid packed a U-Haul and took a chance on a place he’d never seen. I’m forever grateful that he did.

Thank you, Tulsa.
Thank you, Oklahoma.
Thank you for the life I got to live here.

Never posted a real goodbye.

Owasso, thank you for the last three years. Amazing experience in the classroom & apart of the athletic department. To my students, you all made showing up everyday worth it. Three things: continue to chase your dreams, always strive to be a good person, & always be a cheerful giver.
