I rewatched Ms. Tootsie’s episode of “Chef’s Table: BBQ” last night with my son. I grew up in Dallas through high school, so Texas is in my roots. Earlier this Summer, I had the privilege of photographing the @tdcbigtexasbbq event with @coco_digital thanks to my friend @bryan_patrick_harris. The event is produced by the @touchdownclubdallas as a fundraiser for @riseschooldallas. The convergence of being back home at the Cotton Bowl, photographing a Texas BBQ competition for the benefit of an integrated special needs school was a highlight of my year. As a parent of a special needs child, I understand the importance of having support and advocacy for our amazing children. And getting to meet the legendary Ms. Tootsie was definitely the special sauce.

It’s a massive understatement to say that this has been a unique year, obviously. And we’ve done our best to keep pushing to find the lessons that should be learned and the priorities that should be elevated. Part of my effort has been being open to opportunities and pushing past the inner voices that charge themselves with convincing me to stay in a place of safety with known quantities and outcomes. More simply, I’ve tried to push myself to say “yes” more and trust that the pieces will fit together in a desired way.

So when a colleague sent me a message to call him about an opportunity for which he was unavailable, I pushed through the hesitation of feeling too busy and made the call. That call led to the opportunity you see here. I’m grateful for the few minutes with Dr. Phil and meeting the amazing family he worked with on this episode. The joy and energy was real. If you’re curious, look up House Calls with Dr. Phil, Season 1, Episode 4. Yes, he introduced me as John “Mills”, but I’ve been called a lot worse. Much love to you all and special thanks to @nathanhindmanphoto for the call - I still owe you beers.

Four days, 75 recipes, and countless laughs and tears later, the primary photography for this beautiful cookbook is complete.

I’m so grateful to my friend Eli (@attachmentnerd), her superstar 11-year-old chef son, Slate, and Jill (@jill_saginario) of @sasquatchbooks for trusting me to bring these images to life.

What a joy this project has been. ❤️ by @johnsmiller

Some moments can only belong to the West.

Quiet confidence, effortless beauty, and jewelry inspired by the place we call home. Seen through the lens of John Miller, with Hanna at Diamond Cross Ranch, each detail reflects the spirit behind Jackson Hole Jewelry, refined, rooted in the Tetons, and made for a life lived a little wild.

There are places you visit, and places that stay with you.

The quiet mornings. Golden evenings. Familiar roads. The Tetons always somewhere in the distance.

Jackson has a way of becoming part of the stories you take with you, and the pieces you choose to remember them by.

To my sweet, compassionate, generous family and friends, I begin by saying that I love you. I likely would not have had the strength to make it through this ordeal without you. I am overwhelmed, exhausted, determined…and home.

For those of you who don’t know, I suffered a heart attack last Friday and was rushed into what became a quadruple bypass.

This last week has been the most horrifically painful and mentally crushing week of my life. By God’s grace, I had a warrior angel with me along the way and it brings me to tears to know what she’s been through this week. Amanda’s perseverance, consistency, raw strength and overall radiance kept me going minute to minute, and the minutes were harder than I could have ever imagined. She read me your texts, messages, posts, stories and comments and they gave me hope. They gave me fight. They told me I have so much more to live for. The next time you see her, know that you’re with one of the greats.

I assume almost all of you know we had a hard year last year. Each night in my room, I was a block away from where my niece is preparing for leg amputation at Children’s Hospital. You’ve heard the stories of my Dad’s heart attack and eventual passing with uncontrollable cancer. You’ve heard that my mother-in-law is awaiting surgery for stomach cancer (and if you know Tami, you know she worked tirelessly behind the scenes with Troy to take care of every possible need). You might have seen that my older kid’s Grandmother passed recently. The (our) world has been full of suffering and pain. More importantly, it’s been full of togetherness and learning to care for each other as a priority not as an afterthought. I know you understand, because you read the initial story about me and responded. You continued to respond and ask others to respond as well. I think the world would be better if we continued to do that, so I hope that if you have another family member or friend who is suffering or in pain today, that you would reach out to them and keep doing it. I can tell you from first hand experience how much you doing that for me has changed each day remarkably for the better.
