This is it! After four years of research and dozens of interviews with people who knew him and loved him, THE LEGEND OF PAUL JOHNSON: 5 Mag’s special issue dedicated to the Chicago house music pioneer is OUT NOW✨

Due to the interest in this story & to spread the word as far as humanly possible, this book length issue is available completely free! ✅ Visit the link in our bio and sign up to download this issue now!

Our story follows @johnsongram ‘s life and music from his early days on the Southside of Chicago and meeting with his soon-to-be famous peers, to the shooting accident that left him unable to walk. Paul emerged from rehab with an INCREDIBLE tenacity, recording tracks on whatever equipment he could find – tracks that would become synonymous with the golden age of #chicagohousemusic in the 1990s, released on Dance Mania, @officialgreenvelvet’s Relief Records and culminating with the worldwide fame of his smash hit “Get Get Down.”

Along the way we meet an incredible cast of characters, from witnesses of the birth of the American rave scene and Paul Johnson’s role in it, and the lost history of Chicago tapedeck DJ culture. Friends and collaborators @ericmartinsquad @djgantman @michaelairhartexperience @munkjulious and many others give us a rare glimpse of Paul Johnson in the studio and his remarkable generosity in tutoring generations of #housemusic producers. Daft Punk wrote a track you might have heard of called “Teachers,” and the first two words of the lyrics are “Paul Johnson.” That is not a coincidence.

Get this issue now for free at 5mag.net, link to sign up in our bio. Cover 📸 by Marie Staggat. This is for Paul ❤️ taken in Chicago, Illinois by @johnsongram

Straight from Chicago, raw and free.
@johnsongram tears down borders, transforming Healing of the World into a jackin’ club anthem.
Ritual groove. Pure essence. House culture, uncompromising.

Who is @johnsongram ?

One again, for our youngest followers, Paul Johnson was a legend of (Chicago) House music.

He was one of the first underground artists of that scene who made an overground sound : the eternal banger « Get Get Down », released in September 1999.

Afterwards, his discography got bigger and bigger and, despite his loss in 2021, his heritage still goes on with posthumous release.

A collab with @joshwauk appeared a couple of months ago and now, an exclusive collab with @mercer is about to be available for everyone. Warning : it’s a huuuge tune.

Daft Punk, the iconic French duo, paid homage to Chicago legend DJ Paul Johnson in their groundbreaking album Homework. With Johnson’s influence, they were able to create a unique blend of French house music that would define their signature sound for years to come. As a pioneer in the industry, Johnson’s contributions to the album cannot be understated. #DaftPunk #DJPaulJohnson #Homework #chicagohouse #FrenchHouseMusic #teachers taken in Paris, France by @johnsongram

Celebrating 40 years of House music with our late brother Paul Johnson. Here’s the untold “Get Get Down” story as told during the @shdwchld show on @rinse.fm just before Paul left for Europe for his 420+ Tour. Mind you the tour received its name from the amount of records he produced. 😉🪴
