Thank you @abcgma3 for joining us at the 28th Annual #JohnStarks Celebrity Classic and spreading awareness about the foundation and its purpose. We could not make the impact on the lives of students without the support of our sponsors, celebrity guests, board members, and friends. #JSF

For young players, individual awards can feel like a measure of whether a season was successful. They are visible, memorable, and often tied to the work a player feels they put in all year.

Former NBA All-Star John Starks shared a memory from 6th grade basketball that stayed with him. After a strong season, he expected to receive the MVP trophy at his team’s awards ceremony. When another player’s name was called instead, the disappointment hit hard.

But the moment also changed his perspective. Starks said he stopped playing for trophies and started playing to win games.

Awards can be meaningful, but they are also subjective and temporary. Starks’ experience is a reminder that young players are better served by focusing on what carries from season to season: competing, improving, contributing to winning, and continuing to grow whether recognition follows or not.
