A few scenes from a terrific week in New Bedford, where I had the privilege of serving as head coach of the first-ever USRowing Beach Sprints Pathways Development Camp.

We had 19 athletes, five staff, four days of training, and an unreasonable amount of sand in absolutely everything. Then it was straight into Youth Trials and Nationals.

The group came together remarkably quickly, raced hard, and came painfully close to earning a couple of spots on the World Championships team. No tickets to Worlds this time, but I could not have been prouder of their effort, composure, and support for one another.

I also reached a new career milestone: coaching the twin daughters of one of my former teammates. Nothing quietly confirms the passage of time quite like coaching the children of former teammates. Apparently, this is my life now.

And because beach sprints occasionally require creative staffing, I ended up racing in a mixed double to make sure everyone got enough racing and I could revisit several decades of personal decisions.

Great athletes. Great staff. Great week. I’d do it all again—after some Advil and some physical therapy.

My job is beach.

Hosted Team GB this week in Long Beach. Despite the Fourth of July crowds, they got in some outstanding training on the LA28 Olympic course and even found time to locally watch England beat Mexico without causing an international incident. 🇬🇧⚽️

It was a pleasure spending the week with such talented athletes, professional coaches, and genuinely great people. Looking forward to welcoming them back—and plenty more international teams—to Long Beach in the future.

This is my 30th year coaching rowing. This weekend I got to add something new to the résumé: Race Director of my first Beach Sprints Regatta.

Running an event on the future LA28 Olympic venue was equal parts exciting, exhausting, rewarding…and educational.

Among this year’s discoveries:

* Buoys don’t always stay upright as well as you’d like.
* Sand gets into absolutely everything.
* Boat handlers are worth their weight in gold.
* No matter how much you plan, you’ll still be solving problems in real time.
* And that’s part of the fun.

Fortunately, we had an incredible group of volunteers, officials, athletes and supporters who rolled with every challenge and helped put on a fantastic weekend of racing.

For a first attempt, I’m really proud of what we built.

And the best part? We already know exactly how to make next year’s event better.

Sometimes the first year isn’t about perfection—it’s about proving the idea works.

A lot going on this weekend and a lot to be proud of. But I’m most proud of James at his first Powerlifting competition where he PR’d on the squat at 242lbs and officially passed his dad by 7lbs.

I’m still stronger on deadlift though.

Had a surprise visitor to Long Beach this afternoon! Super fun having @arshaycooper at LBRA to learn about our coastal team and how hard our athletes are working!
