Works well with words that don’t have pauses in between them. Try it for your self, I learnt this from a BAFTA Award winning sound editor. #videoediting #davinchiresolve #audioediting #noaiart by @johnw_sullivan

We come to realise this after many trials and errors, after long days and nights, after lots of money wasted and a period of stepping away and coming back. šŸ™ #simplicity #filmmaking #claudeanimation by @johnw_sullivan

When you share a moment with the thing that you are filming, this little fella was lucky not to get ridden over by a truck as you can see with the tire marks. Filming days have been tough and relentless but moments like this makes it all worth while. It’s precious to care for another creature šŸ™ by @johnw_sullivan

Got way too much footage to cut?, transcripts have thousands of words, desicion fatigue? Here’s a quick tip on how to break down your scripts quickly, āš ļø warning, I don’t use this all the time, only when I absolutely need it and running out of time :) it’s always better to know all of your footage in your mind and then use this method (which in this case I do) @blackmagicnewsofficial @claudeai

Good tip use this @syncaila_app to sync your sound! It will@save you a lot of ā°#filmmaking #documentary #filmediting #fixitinpost by @johnw_sullivan

Want to end a scene’s music without relying on AI, here’s a tip from a mentor of mine who won a BAFTA for it. A-lot of experienced editors will know this already but if you don’t, you welcome šŸ‘Œcomment ā€œsliceā€ if you’d like me to create more āœŒļø by @johnw_sullivan

When you see beauty from the inside, it becomes a lens in which you see everything as beautiful, inspired by #genekey1 @genekeys

Behind the Scenes: just used my Iphone 15 pro max again shooting in apple log handheld, this time experimenting with some movement, quick 20min edit with some nature sound fx and Richard Rudd from the Genekeys talking about GeneKey 1 which I am contemplating at the moment, about beauty.

Adding captions seem to dampen the fun process, so may need to make templates to make it feel fun to edit these things. Energy is important when editing, when you’re in a great mood, things flow easily, and not when they aren’t, time for a pause. taken in Blue Mountains by @johnw_sullivan

Imagine your work as play, what will your day look like?

BTS: Stopped to have some lunch on the swan-river Perth, when some inspiration hit, so I shot some scenes on my iPhone 15 Pro Max using BlackMagic cam on apple log , cut it in 15 min using Cap-cut on the phone.

Didn’t have time to do a proper grade so just adjusted the contrast and saturation + Kodak gold filter. Added some Alan Watts talking about play and some free acoustic music and sound fx of the water lapping and birds. Sometimes it’s nice to just create out of the blue.

Oh and digging 4:3 aspect ratio at the moment for that nostalgic feel. @blackmagicnewsofficial #iphonecinematography #alanwatts #filmmakers taken in Perth, Western Australia by @johnw_sullivan

New show called Rookie Truckers that I had the pleasure of working on as a field producer, drone operator and second camera operator.

What I learnt most about working in the Outback, filming with small crews, wasn’t just the technical side of filmmaking of getting the shot or the story. This experience levelled up my interpersonal skills: when to hand the director a sandwich at just the right moment, how to stay calm overtaking a 50-metre road train whilst another one is just beyond the horizon, how to support my crew’s energy so they can perform at their best, when to step in with the drone and when to hang back with the camera, and how to position the production car so it’s accessible but not in the way of the shot or the crew.

I also got to learn how other directors and camera operators work and pick up their skills, their thoughts and processes, as well as hear from editors on the mistakes shoot crews need to fix and how we can improve on them.

This show taught me about building awareness on shoots, because at the end of the day we’re dealing with relationships and people. I have a saying: when you look after the people, the film will create itself, especially when the pressure is on.

Lastly, it taught me to stay open beyond the shot list or script. To be aware of when magic is actually unfolding in front of you, and you just so happen to be there to respond and capture it. The little sleep and the multiple 12-hour days before that were simply preparation for that one moment where the story comes together and becomes gold! taken in Mount Magnet, Western Australia by @johnw_sullivan

As creatives, one of the things we learn on our journey is the weight of labels and credits. And while they have their place, when we base our identity on them, they eventually limit us.

We’ve become too attached to them, placing great importance on titles and this was taught to us through the hierarchy model. But that model is being superseded by a new way of seeing yourself within the collective: the synarchy model.

This is where the hierarchy becomes aware of itself and turns from a top-down structure into a circular, lateral system. So how does dropping labels play into this?

This year I experimented with dropping labels, releasing my identity as a filmmaker, a director, and so on. I still use those words as shorthand when talking to others, but they’re not really who I am.

What we really are is multifaceted creator beings capable of doing whatever is needed to bring a creation to life. A label is actually a limitation. And once we attach to one, we place ourselves in a hierarchical dynamic, looking up or down at the very people we’re collaborating with.

How does dropping the label help? Well, if we’re convinced we’re the director, we might not help the assistant carry a bag. Or we ask when does an edit assistant become an editor? These days skillsets overlap and blur. You become one simply by doing it. That question plagued me for years.

It’s in the doing that we create. The ego needs an identity, but it eventually puts us and others in a box. So let it go.
Focus instead on, what is the process of making this film, what do I want to go through, and who will I be by the end of it? The labels and credits will come on their own. Just don’t get too attached.

The process will reveal more of your true nature, and allow you and everyone around you to simply be themselves, to create without limitation. We work better together when we’re not competing over titles. We just want to keep making the art.

Ask instead, what does this creation want me to be right now?

When David was 92 I had the opportunity to work on one of his programs called @davidattenborough Great Barrier Reef for the @bbc and @atlantic_productions. It was an honour as I always dreamt of working on one of his documentaries as a young boy, until one day it came true through a miracle. At the screening of the series I asked David cheekily, how come you haven’t retired? He looked at me in the eye and said, ā€œwhen you love what you do, you will never retireā€ happy 100th birthday old friend, thank you for being an example to all of us to love our life’s workšŸ™ by @johnw_sullivan
