This is another track I was a part of that I really like and feel as though it deserves wider recognition. If I remember correctly, we wrote this originally for @ceelogreen but it fit Bruno’s voice really well and ended up on @brunomars first album entitled Doo-Wops and Hooligans went platinum. CeeLo sings his ass off on it as well. My drums, which we did at Paramount Recording Studios got layered with some programmed stuff and turned out great. It was a fun session with good friends. 2010, I think. Thanks Bruno. ❤️🥁🎹💻jw

Here’s another under the radar release that I was fortunate enough to help write and play drums on. Heart Blanche by @ceelogreen is a really cool album. I’m not sure it was ever released in the US as a physical product. The only vinyl or CD I’ve seen was a Japanese release. It came out in 2015 (I think) but we recorded the tracks I was a part of way before that. I was lucky to work with this dude quite a bit and he’s a genius. I don’t use that word lightly. The only guy I know of besides @reggiewatts that can improvise a tune on the fly and it sounds like a finished song. Unreal. Anyway, fun record deserving of more listens. ❤️🥁🎹💻jw taken in Hollywood, California by @johnwicksdrums

More memory lane stuff…I played drums on a lot of this NASA record, including this standout track called “Way Down” with RZA, John Frusciante, and Barbie Hatch. I was asked to recreate Brazilian funk/tropicalia breaks. This record kinda developed a cult following. Fun stuff. taken in Los Angeles, California by @johnwicksdrums

Another one from the sample-recreation days: I was asked to recreate the drums and triangle part from Wanda Jackson’s “Funnel of Love” for the Brazilian band Bonde Do Role. I just used one old Reslo ribbon mic, and a set of 1960s Pearl stencil drums. And a triangle. Diplo ended up putting programmed drums on top of it, and it turned out great. Super fun. More to come.

When I was first trying to get going doing session work, I spent a lot of time recording myself, trying to replicate old recordings and drum breaks. I chased the exact feel, tone, and room sound of the records I loved. It eventually paid off. For a while, I became known around LA as the guy to call if you wanted the vibe of a recording but maybe they didn’t have the budget to clear samples. A lot of that was stuff like dusty 1960s and 70s Brazilian funk records—those gritty, swung breaks and loose, human grooves. I’d try to #recreate that feel from scratch.

This one was fun and ended up being a track with RZA, guitarist John Frusciante, and singer Barbie Hatch. It was a nice way to enter the session scene. Eventually, producers and artists trusted me enough to deliver what they needed without us going into a studio together, so I started recording them at my home studio. More to come.

Watched an interview with one of my main dudes #andynewmark that @johndechristopher did a while back where he mentioned starting with this book and it forced me to dig it back up. This book probably launched thousands of drummers’ journeys. Love the nice price of $1.50 on this. ❤️ Anyone else start with this one? The Joel Rothman books were in there for me as well.

I have been endorsing @istanbulagop cymbals for upwards of 20 years now and the musicality of these cymbals never ceases to amaze me. I asked Scott Liken and the folks in LA to pick out a set that I can use for every musical situation I’m involved in from hardcore punk to jazz. They nailed it. I like to wear cymbals out until they die and get very familiar with what they do. This time around they sent me the new Traditional Series 20” medium ride, and 18” thin crash, a 20” 30th anniversary crash/ride, some 14” Xist Brilliant hats and 15” crash that I’m gonna put rivets in. Very excited to tour and record with these. Thanks guys for all of the support over the years. I’m honored. ❤️Wicks taken in Missoula, Montana by @johnwicksdrums
