Earthy, monumental, and refined.

Another new work reflecting my continued immersion in Japanese prints, scrolls, paintings, and screens — now on view at Ralph Pucci, New York City.

Landscape has always played an important part in my work, particularly in composition. Japanese prints share a deeply balanced approach to landscape — horizons placed with intention, space simultaneously flattened and layered, the viewer invited not to look at a place but to inhabit a feeling of one. Stillness, horizon, and the slow passage of time.

This new body of work continues my ongoing exploration of the Domino series, a group of side tables drawing direct inspiration from Richard Serra's monumental steel sculptures. Serra's work has long fascinated me — the way massive forms lean, torque, and press against one another, held in place by nothing more than weight and precision.

Each table is constructed from four large hand-built glazed ceramic slabs. The slabs interlock in a cross configuration, balanced against one another, creating a base that reads simultaneously as solid and precarious. The tension is intentional. These pieces are meant to feel caught mid-movement, as if the forms are still settling into their final position.

New work! Now on view at @ralphpucciintl New York City.

Lately I have been immersed in the study of Japanese prints, scrolls, paintings, and screens. What draws me in most is the composition — the deliberate use of color, negative space, and a verticality that feels both restrained and monumental. There is a quietness to these works that I find myself chasing in my own pieces.

It was fun working on small objects for my exhibition at Ralph Pucci Los Angeles. High firing in the kiln @studioamoca made all the pieces more interesting.
