Hoe ontstaat een voorstelling die precies draait om de ruimte tussen alles in?

Voor PopMonument spraken we Joyce den Hertog en Laila Spee, onze Artists in Residence, tijdens een repetitie in een dansstudio in Amsterdam-Noord. Over hun samenwerking, het maakproces en 間 ‘Ma’: een bijzondere ontmoeting van muziek, beweging en de ruimte daartussen.

Tijdens PopMonument x VESTROCK in Hulst kreeg het publiek alvast een eerste voorproefje van hun werk. Inmiddels kijken Joyce en Laila vooruit naar PopMonument Bergen op Zoom op 12 september, waar 間 ‘Ma’ opnieuw te zien is, in een verder ontwikkelde vorm.

WORK IN PROGRESS! We had the pleasure to be invited by @circusnext to come to @lagrainerie in Toulouse to work on my project: The Robot Arm Etudes

Together with fellow residents we researched what it means to work with this machine on stage in a loving, caring, sensitive, blind, surprising, useless, and unfathomable fashion.

I would love to spend more time in research and creation, and share that progress with my audience, but it is expensive and complicated. If anyone has suggestions on how I can make more of it happen, I'm all ears.

𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗴 𝘅 𝗟𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲
In navolging van Aafke Romeijn, Luka, Amatorski en puntjudith presenteren we vandaag onze nieuwe PopMonument artist in residence 2026.

Lichtkunstenaar 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗴 en danseres/choreograaf 𝗟𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲 presenteren 間 ‘Ma’, een interdisciplinair performanceproject over de Schemerzone: de ruimte tussen wat zichtbaar is en wat nog vorm moet krijgen. Ma staat voor de betekenisvolle leegte, het moment van overgang waarin tijd vertraagt en aandacht verscherpt.

In deze performance onderzoeken Den Hertog en Spee hoe identiteit, transitie en aanwezigheid ontstaan in die Schemerzone. Tussen licht en donker, tussen beweging en stilstand, tussen loslaten en worden. Met licht, beweging en technologie maken zij het ongrijpbare voelbaar.

De try-out van 間 ‘Ma’ vindt plaats tijdens PopMonument x VESTROCK op zaterdag 28 maart.

First wonky tests at using mediapipe to control a robot arm with my elbow movements. 🤖

- Exploring body intuition and AI’s understanding of it.

Starting in October 2025, supported guest artist Amit Palgi (Mixed Signal Collective) and creative technologist Joyce den Hertog began a process of inviting an intelligence without a body or feelings to explore this phenomenon with us; to tease, challenge, and inspire us to wonder: What is this intuition? And what is its future?

Inspired by the Turing Test, which highlighted human language capabilities and a machine’s understanding of them, our research aims to highlight the emotional-intuitive capabilities of humans. We are developing a Turing Test for somatic dance movement—a “True-ing Test”—and will observe how AI generates intuitive movements in response to questions, compared to human dancers. We are developing a prototype tool where one watches human and AI-generated movements ‘answering’ the same questions. In doing so, we want to question the nature of human intuition and creativity.

The first research update gathering will be on 14 December 2025, hosted by ICK Dans Amsterdam in Space for Dance Art. At this event, we will share our process and results so far, as well as our plans for the next few months of research. ICK will share insights from their related work with AI and movement, and together we will brainstorm about the artistic and scientific potential of this research.

The True-ing Test research is conducted by:
Amit Palgi – A choreographer and dance artist whose interdisciplinary practice mixes somatic dance with immersive technology; and Joyce den Hertog – A creative coder, technologist, and maker who applies technical knowledge for artistic purposes in dance and theatre.
