I really don’t know where to begin, how to start, how to press pause. every second I feel different. I miss you. I miss your laugh. I miss the way you hit me and I hit you back and forth and back and forth. I miss sleeping with you sleeping so far away from you because the heat from your body would make me so hot. and then just to annoy me, you would jump on top of me yelling “STARFISH” as you laid flat on me, legs and arms spread. I miss arguing with you, everything was always maisa’s stubborn way and we let it happen that way everyday. I miss your eye roll and attitude, no one did it like you. You promised to buy all my outfits for my shows because you know I don’t shop, and I know you never stopped shopping. my princess fashionista super star. My biggest accomplishment will forever be you, in so many different ways I can’t even explain. Seeing you for the last time and getting to spend those last thirty minutes alone just talking laying next to each other, will forever replay in my mind. never again another hospital, another scan, another medication, you’ve suffered enough on this lifetime, inshallah Jennah will open its gates to you. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you or take your pain away, but I tried my hardest.
To my siblings and I, Maisa was not just a cousin. She was never just the daughter of our mother’s brother. Maisa has a much stronger tether to us than that. Maisa is our soulmate, our soul sister bound to us with something more special than love and more powerful than family. Something from the stars, from the cosmos, something unexplainable but so familiar.
Maisa was always someone more to us, someone more to me. Our birthdays are 3 months apart, me being the eldest. And although I held it over her head when we were younger, it did not really matter because we were the same, so different, but so the same. So much of me is made from what I learned from her, and she will always be with me like a handprint on my heart, I can’t wait for the day we skip down the yellow brick road together inshallah. You have changed me For Good.

Thank you to BHR for helping us host this event. To all of our volunteers, Mrs. Bongiorno, we would not have made space a beautiful Studio 54 without you. To the WIM members, Gina Dige, for taking photos tonight and for our beautiful photoshoot featured in our video. Shout out to @Blackswallowtailstudios, Erik Massimino, for snapping some beautiful shots through out our event! Our sound team, the entire production team. I am so honored to have had the chance to host these amazing women at Monmouth University on behalf of Women in Music. Planning and executing this event has been such a meaningful experience, and the lessons I’ve gained are ones I will carry with me throughout my career.
