Looking back at our final SOUPerb visit to Stoop Your Head in Skerries 🥣🌊

Right by the harbour, we met the team, headed into the kitchen and heard all about the chowder that has become such a favourite here.

Fresh seafood, a classic creamy bowl and plenty of care behind every serving 🍤 Take a look at what made Stoop Your Head one of our five SOUPerb finalists!

A look back at a pretty spectacular setting for a bowl of chowder 😍🌊

At McLoughlin’s in Mulranny, we heard all about what goes into making their chowder, from the seafood to the way they serve it (yes, dipping the chips is encouraged 🍟).

Great local ingredients, an incredible view and a serious love for chowder 🥣

Taking it back to our visit to Pat Cohan’s in Cong, Co. Mayo. A SOUPerb finalist for the second year running! 🥣

This one was all about the story behind the bowl. We heard about the influences that go into their chowder, met the people making it and got a closer look at what makes it uniquely Pat Cohan’s. 💚❤️

Safe to say, there’s a lot more to a great chowder than meets the eye 👀

Three days. Just over 2,000 km across Ireland. A lot of chowder. And a lot of laughs. 🥣🚐🇮🇪

This was my third year hitting the road to film the @cullyandsully SOUPerb Awards and the search for Ireland’s Best Bowl of Chowder… seriously one of the most fun and tasty jobs ever!

I love travelling this country, I adore Irish food, but most of all I love meeting the people behind it: the chefs, owners and teams who put so much heart, pride and passion into what they do.

Our judging team this year was Sully, John & Sally McKenna of @mckennasguides and @cassiestokes.

Our SOUPerb tour took us to:

@osullivanscrook in Crookhaven
@theroadsidetavern_storehouse in Lisdoonvarna
@mcloughlinsmulranny_ in Mulranny
@patcohansbarcong in Cong
@stoopyourheadskerries in Skerries

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes glimpse of the madness from my side of the camera, the travelling, filming, tasting and all the bits in between.

The full video series is coming soon, when you’ll get to properly meet all of the finalists, see the places we visited and, eventually, find out who takes home the title of Ireland’s Best Bowl of Chowder. 👀🏆

A huge thanks to the whole @cullyandsully team and everyone we met along the road for making another Tour de Chowder such a brilliant one.

A personal post that’s hard to write….. feeling absolutely heartbroken that my love Gerrit Bekker, passed away in a motorcycle accident this week. 💔

In the time we had together, he taught me more than many people do in a lifetime. He had the biggest heart, a gorgeous smile, a wonderful sense of adventure and spontaneity, brought so much joy (and some crazy new dance moves) into my life. I will always be grateful for every moment we shared.

Thank you for loving me Gerrit, you will be missed more than words can ever say and I’ll carry you with me always. ❤️

Thinking especially of his family and his beautiful children, as they navigate this unimaginable loss. And thank you to all who have reached out this week with so much love and care. It’s all so hard to comprehend and your thoughts are so much appreciated x

Any motorcyclists who would like to accompany Gerrit on his final ride from Newmarket to The Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, on Thursday 9 July are welcome. by @joleencronin

This time last year, we were putting the finishing touches to week two of our shoot for My Irish Kitchen Table with @eunice_power_

What a journey it turned out to be.

There were early mornings, long days, endless cups of coffee, styling tweaks, plenty of giggles, also tears, sea swims, many memories, and more plates of food and hungry hands than you could possibly count. This book is filled with people as much as recipes, reminding us that the best food is rarely just about what’s on the plate.

It was my first full cookbook project, and a real lesson in collaboration. Working alongside Eunice, food stylist @oneligan , @touhy74 playing a blinder in the kitchen, and the wider creative team at @gillbooks . watching recipes come together, chasing light around kitchens and dining tables, and trying to capture the warmth, generosity and sense of home that sits at the heart of Irish food.

Here are a few of my favourite images from the book. Have you tried any of the recipes yet? The chocolate cake alone is worth buying the book for. by @joleencronin

Here are a few snaps behind the camera last week in the old stomping ground @croninspub and @2pointroad

One of those busy food shoot days where you’re moving from table to table, into the cafe, back to the bar, then outside, into the kitchen, back out again, trying to catch the light (or food!) before it disappears. A lot of good food, a lot of hands reaching into frame, and plenty of stopping mid-shoot to actually appreciate what’s coming out of the kitchen.

And if you make it to the last photo, you’ll spot my youngest assistant photographer, my nephew making some very important contributions to the shoot 👶 thanks to my bro @dennycronin and @caro_anna_b for bringing me in for this one taken in Crosshaven Cork Harbour by @joleencronin

In this week's podcast, we sit down with @joe_warwick_ for a conversation that goes beyond the hype of restaurant culture and into what’s really happening behind the scenes.

From his early involvement in The World's 50 Best Restaurants to his work on Where Chefs Eat, Joe brings a unique perspective on how the global food narrative is shaped and how it has evolved over time.

Together, we explore the gap between perception and reality in the restaurant world, from rankings and reputation to media storytelling, and ask whether we’re getting the full picture.

We also touch on the recent conversation around Noma and what it reveals about how stories in food are told, shared and understood.

This is an honest, thoughtful and at times uncomfortable conversation about food, culture and the systems that shape them.

With just two weeks to go, the Ballymaloe Festival of Food returns from 15–17 May, and these are exactly the kinds of conversations you can expect across the weekend. Joe will also be joining us in person for panel discussions and events.
