Just came back from a dreamy two weeks at @haystack_school! I took @christopherkerrayer’s glass workshop where I learned how to blow, cold work and assemble glass objects/sculptures — there are a few vessels I made scattered throughout this dump!!

With “Hanging Lamp In Butterfly Effect,” Jolie Ngo (@jolienope) introduces her first pendant light, expanding her practice into a new functional realm.⁠

Continuing her exploration of the lantern as both a literal and metaphorical building block, the work draws on the form as a touchstone for Ngo’s Vietnamese American identity while also referencing the natural world.⁠

"Other Worlds" | Jolie Ngo

Join us today for a Summer Cocktail Reception at Hexton Gallery from 5–8 PM. Artists Sabrina Piersol and Jolie Ngo will be in attendance.

On the surface, Ngo's objects are a composite of kaleidoscopic patterns that, from one angle, appear disparate but from another, form familiar landscapes. These vibrant, yet hazy gradients reflect the artist’s interest in digital spaces and honoring them as places of connection and memory. Simultaneously, Ngo references her Vietnamese heritage in the form of her work. Faceted shapes evoke traditional silk lanterns, layered textures recall topographic views of rice paddies.

With these pieces, which now expand beyond tabletop objects to functional lighting and furniture, Ngo shapes a new narrative for contemporary ceramics and design at-large.

Now on view through July 9.

🍴Excited to be a part of Knife, Fork, Spoon 3.0, on view June 10–12 in Copenhagen alongside a number of other talented artists, designers, and architects. 🍽️

All of the flatware were 3d printed in stainless steel, so cool getting to print a new material! Here are some of the test prints I did before finalizing the set :)

See you later, beautiful Santa Barbara! I am forever changed after living here for the past two years ❤️ too many photos and memories to choose from, sooo many people to thank for their help, generosity, and friendship while I was there but a huge thank you to @lyndaweinman for her endless love and support towards me and my practice. Turned 30 today :) and I’m hard launching my move back to Providence, RI next month! Feels so bittersweet to be leaving California after living here for the past two years, but I am so excited to be back on the east coast. In a city that has shaped me and my practice, I’m coming back and planting a flag.

Looking forward to what this year brings and here is the current state of my studio as I am finishing up projects before my move.

🌷Excited to share that “Lantern Vessel in All-Over Print” has been acquired by Los Angeles County Museum of Art @lacma! 🪻

Here are a few photos of the piece in my studio just a few days before being picked up.

This piece was one of my favorites from my solo show last year. Vietnamese silk lanterns, architectural scale models and stage design are the more formal influences for this series. The body of vessel takes shape from the silk lanterns, while the wings that grow from the body create small stags or buildings, structures that invite projection. The printed surface operating at a one-to-one scale like a brick within a building.
