POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Have you ever been to the restaurant beside Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle? They have dozens of accordions hanging from the ceiling.

This painting (the pic at the end of the reel) reminds me of that ceiling, which is odd because I didn’t set out to paint accordions.

What do you see?

A painting isn’t really one image, but a collection of small ones. Details often decide where the painting wants to go, creating unplanned focal points, which are almost always more interesting than the finished piece.

By “almost always” I mean always.

I like to think I’m directing the composition, but mostly I’m reacting to whatever the details decide to do next.

I've been thinking a lot about complexity lately. Layers, textures, ambiguity, unexpected outcomes. The things that make a painting difficult to predict are often the same things that make it worth looking at. For years I believed the goal was to master the medium, to make it do exactly what I wanted. These days I'm more interested in accidents, surprises, and the possibility of discovering a whole new direction.
Anyway, here's a flower.

A couple of days ago, I saw a car this colour. Copper and shimmering. It really stood out from all the black, white, and grey SUVs that seem to take up the road. My first thought was, I wonder if I could reproduce that colour with alcohol inks.

As I dive further into the unknown, I’m fascinated by the details.

Teakwood and Currant. They play so nicely together.

“Which Way is Up?”
The piece doesn't care about orientation. Turn it again and it becomes something else. Essentially, you get four pieces in one. One of the perks of abstract art. 🙂

I’m done.

I’ve spent years trying to impose my will on this medium. I have a graveyard of paintings that were almost perfect, right up until the moment I tried to improve them.

What makes alcohol inks especially maddening is that they can produce something beautiful one day and then refuse to do anything remotely similar the next.

"Remember that beautiful lace pattern you got yesterday? We're not doing that anymore. We've moved on to muddy swamps and annoying sticky-out bits."

After taking a two-year break from this one-sided conversation, something inside me decided I could still crack the code. So I had a rethink. I figured if I was going to continue this relationship, I'd need an entirely different approach.

Maybe the problem wasn't the inks. Maybe the problem was me trying to force them to behave.

So instead of telling the inks what to do, I've started creating conditions that allow them to find their own way. For the first time in ages, it feels less like a battle and more like a collaboration.

This may be my last post for a bit, at least until the weather warms up (I paint outside). Happy New Year! Back in the Spring 🌼

After hours of getting nowhere, I was ready to give up on this piece when suddenly I had an idea and everything fell into place. I love it when that happens! 🙂

Painting petals on a background that I did not want to mess up. I kept reminding myself to breathe 😝

Working light. Took a risk adding droplets to a piece that I kinda liked as it was. But kinda like isn't really enough, is it.
