Hunger Games: How writers survive.

Writers do not earn the money that pays the bills in any straightforward way. They all do many things. They almost always have. In recent years though, it has seemed to get harder to make ends meet for a variety of reasons.

The very clever and multi-talented Bibi Slippers decided that there needed to be a panel at this year's Woordfees in Stellenbosch in which we get down and dirty about what it means to be a writer. How do we live? I mean, really. How DO we live?

Especially since writers are not necessarily natural entrepreneurs or natural marketers.

Bibi has assembled the most authentic and brilliant handful of South African writers and one Flemish writer to talk about the economics of being a writer.

I don't know the Flemish writer and I'd be interested to hear how things are for Belgian writers. But I know that for Jolyn Phillips, Ilze Salzwedel and Leonie Joubert, journalism and writing have been a matter of both passionate urgency, and also a necessary rejection of any material comforts.

Kom gesels saam op 26 Augustus om 18:00 in Jannie se Leeskamer, waar Bibi Slippers en Jolyn Phillips met Azille Coetzee in gesprek tree.

Hierdie is die eerste geleentheid in ons reeks wat opgedra is aan die viering van 100 jaar van Afrikaans as amptelike taal – ’n taal wat diep wortels in uiteenlopende gemeenskappe het en wat met trots verskeie variëteite insluit. Ons skrywers laat met hul unieke stemme ’n blywende merk op die boekrol van Afrikaans.

Die meermalige Hertzogprys-wenner dr. D.F. Malherbe het reeds in 1924 gesê:

“Wie op die terrein van ’n volk se spreekwoordeskat werksaam is, moet by alle waters drink: by die wye see van die lewende volkspraak, by riviere en spruite, by die fonteine en syferplekke van die volk se verre verlede …”

Kom vier hierdie ryk en lewendige taal saam met ons!
