Yesterday - to mark #WorldNewsDay - I talked to the inspiring Ashraf Mashharawi, Director of the Palestinian Journalists’ Protection Center.

Earlier this month, the @rorypecktrust partnered with the Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC), providing laptops for freelancers working from its Gaza Media Hub. Helping journalists who have lost so much to continue their work. And ensuring the rest of us know what is happening there.

Despite the devastation and terrible loss of the past three years, Ashraf’s tenacity and optimism for the future are extraordinary.

It takes a village. Or rather a newsroom!

This morning Team Rory - 26 runners from @itvnews, @skynews, @nbcnews, @cnn, @reuters and shirt sponsor, ATR - took on London’s #BigHalf’ in support of freelance journalists around the world.

My running days may be behind me these days, but I was proud to cheer every team across the finish line.

From Sudan to Yemen, Gaza to Ukraine — and here in the UK — these are exceptionally difficult times for freelance journalists.

Thank you to every runner, donor and every supporter. Your generosity offers more than practical help.
It is an expression of solidarity.

It gives them the gift of hope.

It was great to be reunited with motoutofafrica for her podcast ‘All That I Have Met’.

Meredith and I first met each other when I lived in New York. Her dad was an anchor for WCBS and Meredith followed him into journalism. She now also helps others tell their stories as well as telling her own - through her podcast (link in bio).

When we got together, we set the world to rights talking about where the news industry is at right now, the state of media freedom, and the importance of solidarity and of holding the line.

On Sunday, 27 intrepid runners will take on London’s Big Half relay to support freelance journalists around the world.

Seven teams are competing for the title of News Relay champion: ITV News, NBC News, Reuters, CNN and no fewer than three from Sky News.

Each runner will complete a 5K leg from Wapping to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich — apart from NBC’s **Katrina Tudlong**, who is taking on 10K!

Last year, ITV’s Gray’s Inn Gazelles were both the fastest team and the highest fundraisers. This Sunday, they’ll be back to defend their crown.

If you’re up early, come and cheer on your favourite team!

A huge thank you to all 27 runners — and to everyone who has sponsored them. Every penny raised will support freelance journalists facing difficult and dangerous circumstances, from Sudan, Ukraine and Gaza to the UK.

Nearly 30 years ago I became a godfather. Yesterday, I watched @j3ssikparker marry the love of her life, @seany.baxter, as tears rolled down my face.
