Happy Teddy Bear Day Dear @jon__rob__ ! 🧸🤎

Most of you probably know the story already — but since it’s Teddy Bear Day, I’m going to tell it again anyway. 😄

The teddy bear owes its name to U.S. President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.

In 1902, Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi when his companions captured a bear, tied it to a tree and offered the president the shot. Roosevelt refused, considering it unsportsmanlike.

The incident inspired political cartoonist Clifford Berryman to draw a cartoon about it. After seeing the story, New York shop owners Morris and Rose Michtom created a stuffed bear and reportedly asked Roosevelt for permission to call it “Teddy’s Bear.”

At almost exactly the same time, something very similar was happening in Germany: Richard Steiff designed a jointed toy bear for his aunt Margarete Steiff’s company. 🐻

Two stories on opposite sides of the Atlantic — and the beginning of one of the most beloved toys in the world.

More than 120 years later, teddy bears are still there to be hugged, comfort us, keep childhood memories alive… or simply provide a perfectly reasonable excuse for grown women to cuddle one on the sofa. 😄🧸
