Shambhala! Oou shambhaLALA! what a wild one that was. Thanks to the boys @sliceoflifeco @pashakiyo @artof_freerein for putting me on and keeping me fueled up the whole time. This one was special because many vendor friends had always told me i needed to come, and i felt blessed to be able to be there. I got to create some art that even resonated with someone so much that they bought it. There was a mutual feeling between us because we had recently lost our fathers. I got to see some vendor friends that i hadn’t seen in years since i stopped vending myself. I met some new people and learned some things about how i fit into this wild life. These past few years have been hard for me, and i just hope to find some peace and purpose as i keep wandering in different directions. I truly appreciate all the people who share their own experiences and remind me that none of us have it all figured out. by @jon_swartz_

We fKen love you Jon 🐌🦓🦓🦓❤️‍🔥

I first met Jon at Camp Barefoot in Bartow, West Virginia, in 2012. I may or may not have been bartering mind altering substances in exchange for one of his pieces hanging on the wall. Walking into his art tent felt like stepping into another dimension. One of my earliest memories of his work was a painting of a little boy pissing rainbows, called “Playground.” Completely absurd. Completely unforgettable. While other people were making art, Jon seemed to be making his own universe.

Jon grew up in Philly, with his imagination fueled by comic books. As a kid, he loved Calvin and Hobbes and was into everything from Spawn, Spider Man, and Batman to darker, stranger worlds like Sin City, Trencher, The Maxx, and Lobo. Jon told me how he loved “the chaos, the weirdness, the exaggerated anatomy, and the expressive linework” of artists like Ralph Steadman, Todd McFarlane, and Frank Miller.

Jon was accepted into the prestigious Philadelphia Creative and Performing Arts High School. While school was a structured environment, a few of his new artist friends introduced him to the world of graffiti. “I was like, ‘Oh shit, here’s a whole new outlet.’” The streets became his gallery. The city became his canvas. Jon was arrested numerous times for graffiti, but despite spending a few nights in jail, this chapter gave him a new found freedom for his artistic expression.

Today, Jon describes his style as “impressionistic surrealism.” His work exists somewhere between dream and reality, blending the raw energy of graffiti, the storytelling instincts of comics, and the symbolism found in surrealism. To Jon, “the bird represents freedom, but in this case, freedom comes with a price.” The hundred dollar bill implies cost. The image asks a simple question that sits at the heart of this album: is anything ever free, can it be?

So yeah… the kid who grew up obsessed with comic books never really disappeared. He just started creating worlds of his own. And it sounds like even though it wasn’t free, it was well worth the cost. by @jon_swartz_
