Brown belt debut: done.

A few things to be pleased with. A few things to be dissatisfied with. Both are equally valuable if you are willing to examine them honestly.

Someone explain to me how I conceded two points here. I still haven’t figured it out.

I use a lat uchi mata to force my opponent to post his hand on the mat. This creates an opportunity to establish wrist control and use that connection as a point of control and escaping turtle.

A single-leg entry I’ve been working on. The objective is to manipulate the opponent’s steps before committing to the leg. As he attempts to retreat off the mat, I elevate the leg on the outside and transition towards the turtle position.

I arrive at one of my preferred back-taking positions: the half Nelson. Unfortunately, my placement is slightly too high on the neck, compromising the control and allowing us to roll over.

There is always something to learn. Success reveals what works. Failure reveals what needs attention. Both deserve the same degree of examination.

Credit to my opponent. An absolute stud on the mats and a gentleman off them.

This is competition at its best. Two athletes testing their understanding of the same art. Nothing but respect.

Pressure and intention over haste. A small error, a tight grip, Kimura.

Reminder to self:

We GET to do this.

We have the financial means and physical ability to travel across the world, compete at the highest level, expose ourselves to difficult challenges and test our understanding of the art.

We get to meet new people, build friendships, exchange knowledge, share techniques and experience cultures different from our own. We get to see cities, countries and parts of the world we might otherwise never have visited.

And I consider myself doubly fortunate because I get to experience all of this alongside my life partner. To share these experiences, challenges, victories and setbacks with her makes everything that much more meaningful. She makes the entire journey ever more worth it.

All of this through a shared passion for a martial art.

And the pursuit never really ends. There is always another challenge, another weakness to address, another level of understanding to reach. Keep challenging yourself. Keep seeking opportunities to test what you know and discover what you don’t.

When you compete, compete to win. Be ambitious. Take the outcome seriously. Collect data, identify your shortcomings and use the experience to become better.

But never become so consumed by the pursuit of victory that you lose sight of the opportunities that brought you there in the first place.

We are fortunate to have these opportunities. Don’t take them for granted.

Open mat shenanigans 🤼‍♂️

Sweaty summer scraps with a long-time coach and friend. He may not spend nearly as much time in no-gi as I do, but the experience and technical understanding are always there to make for some good rounds.

A lot of work on standing-to-ground transitions, with a particular focus on collar ties, underhooks, and using these connections to steer the opponent’s steps and create attacking opportunities. These are areas I’ve been putting a lot of work into heading into Euros, and I’m feeling good about the progress.

On the ground, the focus was on top control: reducing space, tightening positional control, and limiting the opponent’s opportunities to recover.

The goal is to make familiar positions more reliable and the details increasingly difficult to exploit.

Snippets from today’s training.

Side sankaku into the Kimura dilemma — creating dilemmas by forcing the opponent to defend one threat at the expense of exposing another.

Rear naked choke from the side crucifix — isolating the upper body, limiting defensive options, and exploiting the openings that emerge.

Position, control, and the systematic removal of defensive options.

A shark tank tests more than technical ability. It tests your conditioning, decision-making under fatigue, and willingness to keep working when things stop going your way.

I challenge any grappler in this country to come out of a shark tank with these two gentlemen and consider themselves successful. Plenty of taps, a few successes, and a serious toll on my cardio.

The body was tested, the lungs were tested, but most importantly, so was the mentality. To step back onto the mats round after round, knowing more discomfort awaits, and keep thinking, adapting, and searching for solutions.

My body took a beating, but my mentality held.

These are the environments where weaknesses are exposed and resilience is developed.

Grateful for two excellent training partners who keep pushing me.

Iron sharpens iron.

A couple of hours spent at Recovery Lab this Sunday.

Beautiful facility and consistently excellent staff. Always welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive. Highly recommend paying them a visit.

Cryotherapy, compression boots, and red light therapy were on the agenda.

Recovery begins with the fundamentals: nutrition, sleep, and intelligent training. Additional modalities can complement these foundations, but never replace them.

One more hard week of sparring before we begin the final taper.

T-minus 9 days until the IBJJF No-Gi Euros. The objective now is to preserve what we have built and arrive ready to perform.

Lately, I’ve been exploring the passing opportunities from top camping.

I view it as a transitional position, much like headquarters, that allows me to control the opponent’s defensive structure before progressing into the pass.

My preference is to establish chest-to-chest control. To do so, I must first overcome one of the opponent’s two knees.

In the first sequence, I adjust after my partner successfully loads my weight onto my hands, finding a route around the top knee.

In the second, better circling toward the hips allows me to clear the bottom knee.

Two solutions to the same problem: remove the knee barrier, establish chest-to-chest control, and progress toward the pass.

Still a work in progress, but one that fits my passing system perfectly.

In all seriousness.

Teaching kids requires a different approach than teaching adults. Not necessarily in technique or ambition, but in responsibility.

These kids balance daily training, school, homework, fatigue, and competition.

Training must challenge them, but it must also be fun and provide a safe environment.

Our job extends beyond building better grapplers. We are helping shape reliable, disciplined, and good-hearted people.

The medals matter. The people they become matter more.
