Ilokano | Itneg | Tingguian

Long history of trade, cultural exchange in neighboring communities & evolving weaving practices helped preserve these patterns. We also need to recognize the distinct identities and knowledge of the Ilokano and Itneg peoples. Rather than viewing the similarities as evidence that one tradition simply belongs to the other, it is more accurate to understand that these are reflections of centuries of cultural interaction across Northern Luzon.

I revisited this thought process with a clearer mind, so much more peace & realizations. This sentiment has reached so many, & I believe that is because so many of us who truly care and love our country oftentimes look at the ones who were able to preserve their ancient ways & feel that grief & pull in our hearts.

Maybe if colonization wasn’t too disruptive, our motherland would have carried fewer of the wounds left by colonialism. Maybe more of our stories, songs, beliefs & ways of seeing the world would have continued unbroken from one generation to the next. We cannot always know & it will be a difficult journey to remember the history we never lived but we can choose to acknowledge the one that came before colonization.

After reading, learning & speaking with those who know more, I realized that there are so much of beliefs, customs, traditions & superstitions I grew up around that have carried over and continued to be passed down. Although not always known, I thank & humbly acknowledge the ones who kept fragments of them alive in their daily lives.

A moment in my tattooing journey I will never forget. I knew the ceremony is to honor their little sister who just passed away. What I didn’t know is that she was a NICU baby. I was holding back my tears when they were telling us about her miracle story. Crazy how those two opposite worlds met at that moment & brought an even deeper connection between us.
Our ancestors are definitely guiding us.

“Kabsat”

Ilokano for Kapatid. Sibling. Can also be used to refer to a friend or fellow.

I grew up in a tight knit community in the Philippines. People in our compound are mostly related to each other. When I was younger, I was so used to being able to just walk to my Auntie’s house when I needed salt, sugar, oil, leftover rice or anything when my parents were not home.

We went back home this year and celebrated my birthday with my family for the first time after 12 years of not being able to. How I’ve missed just being around everyone!

One thing that struck me is this. My community may not be rich in money, properties or any material things but they show up in different ways. Some help in the kitchen. Some bring vegetables to add to lunch or dinner. Some bring freshly caught fish. Some help out in anyway they could. Contribution isn’t always what you can bring. Sometimes, showing up is enough.

When we did tattoos over there, we didn’t ask for any compensation. But people gave us more than money could ever afford. One thing in particular that I will never forget is when someone gave us ducks! Talaga nga Ilokano style. 😆🤣

What began as a journey to honor my roots has become a personal ancestral awakening for me. I am so honored to meet and share space with so many incredible people through this practice. It has always been personal to me. I shared energies with each person I meet in this space.

Many times in my life, I’ve heard the calling to start this journey. I’ve ran away from it because I didn’t feel ready. It is a big responsibility. I’ve been doing a deep dive into my family’s ancestry & now carry more stories about my distant ancestral past. My matrilineal great grandmother was a healer, a woman with gifts and played a vital role in the births of most of the elders in our community including my father. She used her indigenous knowledge with ancestral traditions & passed them down to my grandmother. Growing up, I watched my lola make oils for her hilot. I still apply some of her practices in my daily life. I’ve always been a spiritual person & though many times in my life I’ve resisted the gifts I was given, I think it’s time to finally acknowledge the gifts that were passed down to me. Honoring these gifts is me honoring my ancestors. It is my act of continuation. My love letter to the ones I never met but are very much parts of me. I choose to carry forward their stories, their language & their ways of seeing the world. I am beginning to understand that I am not separate from them because I am a living expression of their ancient prayers, struggles & dreams. This is my act of resistance. Despite suffering from multiple erasures and attempts to be silenced, the echoes of their voices & the messages they’re sending are powerful. I am choosing to uphold what I have learned through the gifts that were passed down to me. And though my own self-doubts & the world may push back, I am now intentionally choosing to listen to my ancestors’ whispers. by @jonalines.ink
