Recently I got to go up to the Olympic peninsula and see some of the largest and oldest trees of their species in the world!
We were attacked by the ocean and had to cut the trip short but I will be back soon to take in all the glory once again!

Metallic sweat bees
(Agapostemon sp.)are ground nesting bees and generalist pollinators for many of our native plants and crops. They get the name sweat bee because they are attracted to our sweat. The salt from our sweat is a vital resource in the production of egg and sperm.

This beautiful and interesting wasp, The Blue Mud Wasp or, Black Widow Killer (Chalybion californicum) is native to across much of the U.S southern Canada and northern Mexico.
This Mud dauber is unique in that it rarely builds its own nests and ofter removes the larvae of other species of mud dauber from their nests.
On top of that this wasp has an affinity for catching Black Widows for it's young. Stinging and paralyzing the Widow before sealing it in the mud casing to be had as a first meal for the young wasp larvae.

The adult wasp itself does not eat any spiders but is instead a pollinator of many plant species and survives on the nectar of those flowers.

My Job with the Oregon department of agriculture has had me really focusing on tree and shrub ID and, like I do, I dove in head first and started learning as much as I could about trees and how to ID them.

Along with a book of pressed leaves I have started quite the collection of cones! Here are some of the ones I have collected and ID'd ( Most of them atleast.)

I look forward to learning sooo much more about these beautiful giants and I can't wait to share more with you all!

I got to pin these babes for a couple customers at @paxtongatepdx and mounted with help from the ever inspiring @cecropial_arts
If you were wondering, yes these are death head hawkmoths (Acherontia atropes)

Here is the video I mentioned in my previous post! This is the Red Shouldered Ctenucha (Ctenucha rubroscapus)
the first light going over the moth is a black light and then halfway through I switch to a bright white light.

This is one of my favorite Moths and one of the first specimens I have collected over the years. The red shouldered Ctenucha (Ctenucha rubroscapus)
Native to the Oregon coast this day flying moth from the tiger moth tribe (Arctiini) has beautiful iridescent scales over it's entire body and most of it's wings.
I was truly in awe playing around with different lighting to get the iridescence to show up well!
I'll post a video of light passing over it shortly!
