Another color grading study — this time for a fictional commercial about craft and the hands behind it. 🔨

The footage lives in a woodworker’s workshop, so the grade had to do two things at once: hold the warmth of a life’s work, and keep the quiet, focused mood of someone lost in their craft.

My main goal here was to push for the strongest possible color separation — most noticeably through the deep blue tones — while balancing the whole image with rich, warm oranges. The result is a look that feels stylised but grounded: intimate and warm where the hands are working, cool and a little melancholic everywhere else. The interplay of those two poles is what gives it its high-end, premium character.

As with my last study, the foundation is a Kodak 2383 film simulation by SpektraFilm, which I then shaped around the warm/cool contrast that was already living in the room.

Chasing a softer, more intimate film look for my latest color grading study. 🌅🎨

The goal was to make the images feel warm, romantic and a little nostalgic — without pulling them away from the natural character of the footage.

I built the look on a Kodak Vision3 250D → Kodak 2383 film simulation using SpektraFilm, then shaped it around warm skin tones, a soft highlight roll-off and gentle color separation.

What I enjoyed most was watching the look adapt across such different environments — from the cooler tones of the mountains to the warm, backlit forest.

Creating a cinematic image is a process of small, deliberate decisions rather than one big transformation. 🎨

This breakdown shows my simplified grading workflow for another scene from the same narrative study „Unspoken“.

Starting from the Rec.709 image, I first establish a solid technical foundation through Color Correction by balancing white balance, exposure, contrast and saturation. With that in place, I move into Look Development, where the visual language and emotional atmosphere begin to take shape. The Final Grade is dedicated to the finishing touches, using subtle refinements, power windows and shot-specific adjustments to guide the viewer’s eye.

Breaking the process into clear stages allows me to separate technical accuracy from creative intent, resulting in images that feel cohesive while supporting the story.

For this study, the final image also includes my own DCTL-based Kodak 2383-inspired print film emulation, adding subtle density, color separation and a filmic print character.

Every shot asks for something slightly different, but the workflow stays the same.

Creating a cinematic image is rarely about applying a single LUT or film emulation. 🎛️

This breakdown shows my simplified grading workflow for a recent narrative study.

It starts with the Rec.709 image, followed by Color Correction, where I establish a clean foundation by balancing white balance, exposure, contrast and saturation. From there, I move into Look Development, shaping the visual identity and emotional tone of the scene. Finally, the Final Grade is where I refine the image with subtle adjustments, power windows and shot-specific finishing touches.

Separating the technical correction from the creative decisions helps me build looks that remain consistent across an entire project while still serving the story.

The final image also includes my own DCTL-based Kodak 2383-inspired print film emulation, adding subtle density, color separation and a more filmic character.

How do you structure your grading workflow?

Unspoken: A color grading study focused on building a visual language for a fictional narrative.🎨

The goal was to create an atmosphere that feels natural on the surface, while carrying a subtle sense of tension and weight underneath. Muted colors, dense tonalities and restrained contrast help give the images a slightly uneasy quality without pushing the look into something overtly dark or stylized.

For the final image, I also used my own DCTL-based Kodak 2383-inspired print film emulation to add further color separation, density and character to the image.

For me, narrative grading is often about finding the right balance between beauty and emotion. A look does not always need to draw attention to itself. Sometimes, the most effective choices are the ones that quietly shape how a scene feels.

A recent color grading study exploring a softer, more atmospheric visual language shaped by warm sunlight, delicate contrast, and natural skin tones. 🎨

What drew me to this look was the idea of creating something emotional without pushing the grade too far into a stylized direction. The warmth in the highlights, the gentle falloff, and the muted palette all work together to give the images a quiet sense of intimacy and nostalgia.

These are the kinds of projects I enjoy most, because they show how much impact can live in subtle decisions. Sometimes it’s not about bold color contrast or dramatic shifts, but about finding the right balance between light, softness, and texture so the image feels emotionally coherent.

For me, that’s where grading becomes especially interesting: when color starts to shape the mood of a scene in a way that feels present, but never distracting.

A recent color grading training session built around a look that lives in the tension between warm reds and cool cyan tones. 🎨

The contrast between these color worlds creates more than visual separation. It adds depth, atmosphere, and a subtle sense of emotional conflict throughout the frame. The reds bring warmth, intimacy, and energy, while the cooler cyan tones help balance the image and create space around the subject.

This is the part of color grading I enjoy most. Once exposure, balance, and technical corrections are in place, the focus shifts from accuracy to intention. Every color choice becomes a storytelling decision.

A slight shift in hue, contrast, or saturation can completely change how a scene feels.

A New Reference Monitor for My Color Grading Workflow 🖥️

Last week, a long-awaited addition finally arrived at my studio: the ASUS ProArt PA27USD.

As a colorist, having a reliable reference display is one of the most important parts of the workflow. The PA27USD features a 26.5-inch 4K QD-OLED panel with exceptional color accuracy (ΔE < 1), deep OLED contrast, and 99% DCI-P3 coverage, making it a strong tool for professional color-critical work.

What excites me most is the confidence it brings when evaluating images, from subtle skin tones to challenging HDR highlights and shadow detail. Accurate monitoring is essential for making creative decisions, and this display provides exactly the level of precision I was looking for.

I’m looking forward to putting it to work on upcoming projects and exploring its full potential in real-world grading sessions. 🎛️

Yesterday I had the opportunity to lead a Color Grading Workshop for @sintwerk , focused on developing a deeper understanding of color workflows, grading techniques and efficient collaboration between editors and colorists. 🎨

Throughout the workshop, we covered everything from proper project setup and efficient workflows to the fundamentals of color correction, including exposure, white balance and contrast. We also explored scopes, shot matching, node structures, masks and secondaries, as well as export and delivery workflows for social media, web and broadcast.

A big focus of the day was the practical hands-on session with individual 1-on-1 feedback, helping everyone directly apply the techniques to real footage and workflows.

It was great to see how quickly the team picked up the concepts and translated them into practice. The collaboration with SINTWERK was genuinely inspiring, and I really appreciated the trust and the open, motivated atmosphere throughout the entire workshop.

Thank you again for the opportunity and the great collaboration, SINTWERK!

A few frames from a recent color grading study focused on a commercial look for a large-scale energy brand. 🎨

Working with ARRI Alexa 35 footage (Master Anamorphic & Signature Prime), the goal was to shape an image that feels clean, controlled, and contemporary, while still carrying a subtle cinematic depth.

The approach was built around clear color separation and tonal precision — cool, restrained environments contrasted with warmer highlights to create a sense of scale, technology, and human presence within it.

Rather than pushing contrast or saturation, the focus was on balance and consistency across very different scenarios — from wide exterior landscapes to more stylized, controlled lighting situations.

A look like this needs to feel reliable and intentional — not just visually appealing, but aligned with the clarity and trust a brand in this space represents.

A few frames from a recent commercial film I produced for the @linzerpuppentheater , created for their 55th anniversary celebration. 🎥

The visual concept was built around warm, cinematic lighting and expressive backlight to create a slightly magical theater atmosphere — inspired by the feeling of sitting in the audience as a child.

In the color grading, the focus was on preserving natural skin tones while enhancing the warmth and glow of the stage lights to support the emotional tone of the story. 🎨

Always rewarding to shape the look of a project from production through the final grade.

The full film can be seen on the Linzer Puppentheater YouTube channel.

A frame from a recent grading study exploring a Western-inspired narrative. 🌵

The look is built on a Kodak Portra 800 foundation — known for its soft contrast, lifted shadows, and a warmer, more responsive palette compared to Portra 400. It retains detail in low light while allowing colors to drift subtly, rather than locking into rigid separation.

The intention here was to evoke a sense of harshness, distance, and quiet tension.
The palette is gently desaturated, with warmth carried in the highlights while the shadows fall into cooler, slightly green undertones. This creates separation between subject and environment without becoming overtly stylized.

The image is not driven by contrast, but by space and restraint — allowing the environment to feel vast, dry, and emotionally distant.

A Western look isn’t defined by warmth or dust, but by feeling — giving the viewer space to enter the world rather than pushing them into it.
