The wind comes wandering through the trees, a barefoot guest with restless knees. It lifts the leaves in russet flight, and spins them gold against the light.
They flutter down on path and stone, each one a little world along. Then hush-the branches stand and sway, while autumn drifts away.

October has a secret, round and orange and still—hiding in the garden under vine and hill.
They sit fat in fields, with faces yet uncarved, holding summer’s sun for nights that will be starved.
Some become a lantern, some become a pie, some just stay on porches watching cold pass by.
Pumpkin, you are patient, pumpkin, you are round, king of the fall kitchen, crown close to the ground.

Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garage grow? With silver bells, and cockle shells, and pretty maids all in a row.

INDEPENDENCE DAY IN OAKLAND WITH AN AMAZON

Jonathan Barker woke at sunrise, Oakland fog still hugging the hills, tea black, American flag t-shirt on, 52 years of quiet thrills. The 4th was just another Saturday—barbecue plans, maybe a nap—till a gold lasso caught the breeze and Wonder Woman tapped the porch with a thwap.
“No fireworks yet?” she grinned, bracelets catching the morning light. “I heard you liked justice, jazz, and keeping the neighborhood right.” Jonathan laughed “I tri-tip too. You hungry, your highness?” Diana shrugged, “Only if you got enough for Themyscira’s finest.”
So they hit Lake Merritt first, Diana marveled at paddleboats and drums, kids waved sparkles, dogs wore capes—she saluted them with thumbs. Jonathan told her about ‘89, the quake, the A’s, the way the bay rebuilds. She told him about truth, old wars, and how peace is the work that thrills.
By noon they’d manned the grill—his neighbor loaned an apron that said “America 250.” Diana flipped burgers one-handed, caught a frisbee ment for some startled lad. “Your form’s not bad,” Jonathan teased, “but you’re showboating for the crowd.” “An Amazon never showboats,” she said, and tossed a hot dog into a cloud.
When dusk rolled purple over the Oakland skyline, they climbed up to Grizzly Peak, city lights below them, the Bay like spilled ink, both quiet enough to speak. “Freedom,” Diana said, “isn’t a flag or a fight—it’s neighbors who show up.” Jonathan nodded, passed her a root beer. “And remembering to leave room in your cup.”
Then the sky cracked open—red, white, blue, and gold above the port. Every boom echoed off the hills like a promise, a last resort. Wonder Woman watched, soft-eyed. “Your world loves a good display,” Jonathan smiled, “Yeah, but the best part’s who you watch it with on the 4th of July.”
No villains, no invasions—just two friends and a smoky Oakland night, an Amazon with mustard stain, a man who felt 22 in the night. And when the final rocket faded, Diana flew him home past the freeway signs, “Same time next year, Jonathan?” “Count on it,” he said. “Bring the hot sauce by @jonathanbarker500
