Let’s take another look at our most recent Lake Area Mixed Media Meetup at Grounded in Nature with our spotlight artist, Johnathan Thomas! 🎨🌿

This meetup was all about learning, creating, and connecting. Johnathan gave us a closer look into his woodworking and chairmaking process, shared his knowledge with the group, and even gave everyone an opportunity to get hands-on and create alongside one another. It was such a fun evening surrounded by local artists, makers, and creatives!

Stay up to date because we have plenty more to share! 👀 We’ll be announcing our next meetup at Imperial Calcasieu Museum, followed by the reveal of our October spotlight artist, and finally, our last meetup of October, which will take us off site once again! That means we’ll also be showcasing another local business while bringing our creative community together.

A huge thank you to Grounded in Nature for welcoming us, to Johnathan Thomas for sharing his craft and knowledge, and to Imperial Calcasieu Museum for helping make the Lake Area Mixed Media Meetup possible. And most importantly, thank you to everyone who has joined in on the fun, supported our artists, asked questions, made something, or simply showed up to connect. 💛

What a night! 🎨✨

A huge thank you to Grounded in Nature for welcoming the Lake Area Mixed Media Meetup and giving our creative community such a wonderful space to gather, connect, and create!

An extra special thank you to our spotlight artist, Johnathan Thomas, for sharing his time, knowledge, and craft with us. 🪵🤎 We loved getting a closer look at his process, learning from him, and celebrating the work he brings to our local arts community.

And of course, a huge thank you to the Imperial Calcasieu Museum for making this program possible and for trusting me with the opportunity to create and run something that has become so special to me. Watching M&M grow into a space where artists can meet, learn from one another, create together, and support our local creative community has been incredibly rewarding.

Thank you to everyone who came out, brought a project, asked questions, created, or simply spent the evening supporting local art. 🖤

Join us for a special Lake Area Mixed Media Meetup at Grounded in Nature featuring our September Spotlight Artist, Jonathan Thomas!

This month, we’re celebrating local artists, local businesses, and the artisans keeping traditional craftsmanship alive.

The evening will feature a Q&A session with @jonathanbrometheus, where we’ll dive into his journey as a woodworker, his creative process, the traditions behind his craft, and the skill and patience involved in creating furniture by hand. You’ll also have the opportunity to try elements of the historic art of chairmaking yourself and experience this time honored craft firsthand.

And as always, this is a meetup, so bring something you’re working on! Whether you draw, paint, crochet, knit, carve, sculpt, collage, write, or create in an entirely different medium, bring your current project and work alongside Jonathan and other local creatives. You don’t have to practice the same art form to share the same creative space.

While you’re there, be sure to explore and support Grounded in Nature, a local business helping us create more opportunities for artists, artisans, and our community to come together.

September 21 | 6 PM to 8 PM

Grounded in Nature | 115 W Oak Ln, Lake Charles

Free and open to the public. All artists, artisans, makers, and creative minds are welcome.

Come make something, meet someone, and experience a new craft with us.

Meet our September Lake Area Mixed Media Spotlight Artist, Jonathan Thomas!

As we welcome a new month, our August Spotlight Artist, Jen Van Putten, is passing the paintbrush to @jonathanbrometheus. “Pass the Paintbrush” represents one of the ideas at the heart of the Lake Area Mixed Media Meetup: artists supporting artists, sharing their knowledge, introducing our community to different creative practices, and making space for the next artist to be seen and celebrated. With each new spotlight, we hope to strengthen the connections between the many different artists and artisans who make up our local creative community.

Jonathan is a Lake Charles woodworker, furniture maker, and educator whose practice centers around the centuries old tradition of chairmaking. Working largely with locally harvested wood and traditional hand tools, Jonathan allows the natural grain, movement, character, and imperfections of each piece to help guide the finished form.

For Jonathan, chairmaking begins long before a chair takes shape. From harvesting and splitting wood to shaping and joining individual components by hand, his process reflects a careful relationship between hand, eye, tool, and material.

But traditional craft is about more than what we create. It is also about what we pass on. Through teaching, Jonathan invites others into the process, helping preserve the knowledge of chairmaking while encouraging a new generation to discover what can be created with local materials, simple tools, and their own hands.

We are proud to feature Jonathan as our September Spotlight Artist and look forward to giving our community the opportunity to meet him, learn about his process, ask questions, and even experience elements of this historic craft firsthand at our upcoming Lake Area Mixed Media Meetup.

Some traditions survive because they are passed from one set of hands to another. This September, Jen passes the paintbrush to Jonathan, and we invite you to see where he takes it next.🔨🌳 by @jonathanbrometheus

A look into Residency at the Museum Artist @jonathanbrometheus ‘s Three-Legged Stool workshop. This has been a fascinating experience. Students began with rough cut logs that they had to split by hand and whittled down to the desired sizes. We have one more session on August 8, from 8 AM - 11:30 AM. Viewers are welcomed to join us at Central School to witness the completion of these handcrafted stools!

Another Saturday morning, another incredible woodworking workshop with Jonathan at Central School. 🪵

Every workshop is a reminder that craftsmanship isn’t just about building something beautiful. It’s about preserving tradition, sharing knowledge, and learning the “why” behind every cut, joint, and technique.

If you’ve been thinking about attending but aren’t quite ready to build, next Saturday is the perfect opportunity to come as a spectator. Watch the process from start to finish, ask questions, and gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and skill that Jonathan brings to every project. It’s an educational experience just as much as it is a creative one.

We hope to see you next weekend for another morning of learning, craftsmanship, and community. taken in Central School Arts and Humanities Center by @jonathanbrometheus

Missed Jonathan's woodworking workshop this past weekend? Don't worry! There's another opportunity just around the corner.

Join us for Jonathan's two part woodworking workshop on August 1st and August 8th, from 8:00–11:30 AM at Central School Arts & Humanities Center. Designed to build both skills and confidence, this hands on workshop guides participants through traditional woodworking techniques while creating a functional handcrafted project.

Even if the participant spots fill, you're still welcome to attend as a spectator at no cost. Jonathan's workshops are as much about education as they are about making. Watching his demonstrations, learning traditional techniques, and observing the problem solving process offers a valuable experience for woodworkers, artists, makers, and anyone with an interest in craftsmanship.

Whether you're building alongside us or simply soaking in the knowledge, we'd love to see you there. 🪵🔨

What a morning! ☀️🪑

Jonathan’s workshop was packed with creativity, craftsmanship, and plenty of laughs from start to finish. Every stool became a little different as new techniques, stories, and ideas were shared around the room. It was one of those workshops where learning and making happened at the same time, and the energy was contagious.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made the morning so much fun. We loved seeing your creativity come to life and can’t wait to do it again. 🤍 taken in Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center by @jonathanbrometheus

This was a fun. I like to go through my lumber supply and this big oak piece has been telling me “I’m a bench” for years.
I tried some new techniques with my adze. Used it to work the piece into general flatness. I had never used an adze with that intention before and it turned out phenomenal. Logged some quality hours training my hands in the craft.

The Lovers Bench.
Solid oak in the bench top, a live oak branch, and substantial legs of white oak quartered and riven for strength. Black paint at the feet to seal end-grains. Should last 100 years.
