The mornings I spend solo parenting my 3 kids while my incredible wife hustles harder than any woman I know, are sacred. Most mornings, we’re homebodies. If we aren’t taking my oldest to school, or taking a light walk before the Vegas sun gets brutal, we in the house— wrestling each other, eating our breakfast slowly, making a mess, and cuddling as much as I possibly can. This morning went differently and I’m grateful. Routine can sometimes be the safest way for me to refuel, my wife and I’s schedules are dense and a missed step can easily throw every thing off. But sometimes, doing something different, that requires a little more effort, can be more energizing than any rest. #goodmorning #dads #lowriders #family by @jonathonksterling

I dont follow any recipe, but its usually the same suspects, and let’s say for this batch I used about two cups of flour

Dry:
- Flour (70% ap flour 30% semolina or corn meal for texture)
- Baking soda or baking powder, both is better, but one or the other will do, a lil spoon of soda and a bigger spoon of powder for every cup of flour.
- Handful of sugar, what feels right, i put the last of some vanilla protein powder in this batch so i put less sugar
- pinch of salt
- dash of cinnamon

Wet:

- an egg
- a sour cream (buttermilk, yogurt, cottage cheese, actual sour cream, plain milk is fine too)
- drop or two of vanilla extract
- a fat or oil (not soy sauce lol)
- water

I mix the dry ingredients first, and then dump the wet ingredients in at once.

**If you have the tail end of a bag of granola, or some berries bout to go, add them now too.

It’s helps to have a toddler stir it because you never wanna over work the batter. Once the consistency feels right you’re done. Cook one, if it’s too wet or dry, adjust, trust your instincts, it’s just pancakes.

It’s my sweet baby daughter’s 1st birthday. Elia Jovi Jun… I had dreamed of you, thought of you, made decisions for you, and prayed SO hard to meet you, since I was a little girl myself. 2025 has been the year of the book. I’ve read more than I ever have this year. Between running one of the busiest restaurants in Vegas, raising two boys who are VERY full of life lol, and welcoming a perfect daughter with my amazing wife— language has been the quiet companion carrying me through it all.

Thank you, to these writers and storytellers. To all writers and storytellers. I pray that you continue to write, to share your stories, and to influence life like you have mine.

Grab a book next year, read it. I recommend any of the above. All of them have taught me more than I went looking for.

Can’t believe our bright light of a baby boy is TWO! This is emotional for us because we know now from Rhythm just how much “baby” melts off after they turn 2 😭 Shepherd is the perfect name for this little leader. He shines so bright; his joy for life is contagious. His whole face smiles. His fearlessness is unending. Shep- it’s a true honor to be your parents. Most every night, my wife and I sit together and reflect on how good or bad we feel we’re doing as parents. Of course, we talk about a world of other things—but this, this partnership in parenting, we almost always temp-check before we leave the patio, head down for bed, or doze off to TV.

We get super critical. Way too hard on ourselves. We play out our separate doomsday scenarios and see just how unrealistic—yet survivable—they are. Then we remind ourselves of grace. Of how incredibly fortunate we are. Our kids are. How just a generation ago, our parents’ burden ran deeper than ours—and they, like us, had no manual or instructions.

But we do have each other. Our “OGs.” A wealth of knowledge we scavenge through for clues on how to. The guidance of our God. The support of family. All reminding us there’s no “right way” other than showing up, every day. Covering them in prayer. And sometimes, getting out the way.

What an ideal situation I’m in
my kids, in every shade of my skin;
my wife, a partner like kin;
