So sick of this. Why install a public piano if you don’t want people to play it? It’s up to the whim of the train station staff if you are allowed to play. If you’re creating a nuisance and damaging the piano, sure, kick the person off. However, I deliberately play in a style that blends in with the background to not cause a disturbance and it’s still not ok apparently. This time was particularly bad, I arrived deliberately at 2PM to avoid the busy periods (as they have complained before about usage of the piano around 5pm due to train announcements), and I was kicked off within 3 minutes of playing. This isn’t the first time, I’ve had issues with this particular public piano and the staff seem to arbitrarily decide when you can and cannot play. The whole point of public pianos is to share the joy of music with the world, but how are we supposed to do that if we can’t even play it? It’s sad to see, because for a lot of people it takes a lot of courage to go up to a public piano and play their music for strangers. I’ve only ever experienced this issue in New Zealand and it’s sad to see. Doesn’t encourage me or other pianists to return….

What a hectic last few days, from getting kicked off a piano to getting nationwide media coverage. I’m glad I could bring some awareness around the issue, so that no other musicians have to miss out on sharing their music to the general public!! by @jonchristie_

That time in 2023 when a ballerina joined me unplanned when I was playing on one of Sydney’s public pianos. This piano was located under the famous Sydney harbour bridge.
