The chair for a restaurant is maybe the most important decision you make when selecting and designing a venue. We literally spent three years looking at chairs. We just couldn’t find the perfect one. John Wardle and I must have spent hundreds of hours discussing chairs. (Sometimes after dinner service… sorry john)

Eventually, after meeting at Melbourne Design Week, we spoke with @jongoulder . We were drawn to his formed-leather work, something we had never really seen applied to dining chairs, especially in a restaurant setting.

Jon then spent over 12 months developing the chair, with many prototypes and rounds of refinement, to create what we think is a masterpiece: the Pavilion Dining Room Chair. Formed leather, plated brass, and Tasmanian Blackwood.

I reckon this chair will become an icon of Australian furniture design in the years to come. Well done, Jon.

Mantle Linear Light, 2026

Born from sustained collaboration and practice-led design development between @andrewcarvolth and @jongoulder the Mantle Linear Light is a natural outcome of an enduring collaborative design process.

Water-formed leather, press formed for structure, the work draws on shared material knowledge and an ongoing exchange between craft, process and design.

The Mantle Linear Light is now part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria @ngvmelbourne

Festival Chair, 2026

Originally designed for the Adelaide Festival Theatre’s new restaurant by @studioninearchitects and first realised with a solid timber frame for Melbourne Design Week 2026 for Conversations @alpha60thelabel and 100 Chairs by @friends.associates @dale.hardiman @tom_skeehan 💙

The Festival Chair brings together Tasmanian Blackwood and blue water-formed leather, balancing a refined timber structure with the softness and tension of formed leather.

Designed in collaboration, the chair draws on our shared interests in craft, material and the possibilities of traditional processes applied in new ways.

🤎💙 We’re very pleased to share that two works developed through our ongoing collaboration, the Mantle Linear Light and Festival Chair, have been acquired for the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria @ngvmelbourne

Our collaboration brings together distinct craft and design practices, with shared interests in material, process and making. These two works have been developed through an ongoing exchange of ideas, skills and approaches in the studio.

Both pieces are realised through craft and material understanding, exploring structure, softness and the possibilities of forming material through process.

We’re incredibly proud to have this work representing our collaboration and working together, in the NGV collection. A big thank you to @ewanmceoin and @_timothymoore for their support of the work.

When Jon Goulder and Henry Williams were invited to create a work for Chapter House for Melbourne Design Week 2026 in partnership with fashion label Alpha60 – the original plan was aerial.

“We were originally going to hang some really massive parabolic sculptures through the ceiling, but then we were restricted by hanging points and heritage,” recalls Goulder. “At that point we panicked a little bit, to be honest...”

This was plan B. 😅

Throwback to MDW 2026: Jon Goulder and Henry Williams came to Chapter House with a plan to hang massive parabolic sculptures through the ceiling.

Heritage said absolutely not (rude, but fair 🙃).

What they built instead is the kind of scale hardwood almost never gets asked to perform at, and we got to be part of it.

None of this could have happened without the trust these two put in our material. They saw what the material could do and pushed it further than anyone had. @jongoulder @henrywilliamsstudio 🙌

The full feature, with a lot more from Jon and Henry, is live on Australian Design Review now.

Link in bio, it’s worth the read.

📸@jonathanvdk_studio, @eugenehyland, we owe you more than a caption credit for these. Consider this a start.
