so many of the people who come to see me are living inside a life they worked hard to build, and it does not fit anymore. i know that feeling, because i spent years in oil and gas insurance before i let myself admit it was time for something different. and you can be grateful for the path and still be ready to leave it.

i wrote to my email list about my son coming home from the navy, and how i was proud of him and sad about what it cost him at the same time.

most of the people who sit down across from me are experiencing complex feelings and believing one of them has to be the right one and the others are wrong.

it does not work that way, and you do not have to sort it out by yourself.

was i sleeping when i was in corporate? lol no and i don't think anyone ever teaches us how to rest, especially with our phones the way they are now

you can be exhausted and still not know how to stop

travel is one of the ways i rest, and it brings me so much joy

if you're someone who's always on a plane for work, i hope you get at least one trip this year that's only for you

if you're awake at 1am, i know that feeling, and i know it isn't about the mattress. i was an oil and gas insurance broker with fortune 100 accounts…. rigs, chemical plants, fleets of a thousand vehicles… and i wasn't sleeping either, i just figured that was the cost of the job. what i eventually figured out is you can't talk yourself into rest; your body doesn't stand down just because your calendar cleared. the thing that actually moved for me was going somewhere once a week where nothing in the room was my problem.

there are places you can photograph and places you have to stand in to actually understand.

teotihuacan was the second kind.

we started the morning floating above it in a hot air balloon, watching the pyramid of the sun and the pyramid of the moon come into view beneath us. from up there it wasn’t a collection of monuments. it was an entire city built in relationship with the sky.

later, walking the avenue of the dead, the acoustics did something i wasn’t expecting, sound traveling and echoing through that huge open space until it stopped feeling like ruins and started feeling like somewhere people actually gathered.

the part that stuck with me most: we don’t even know what the people who built this called it. “pyramid of the sun” came centuries later. so much of this place is still unknown.

one version of it from the sky. one from the ground. still not sure which one taught me more.
