Funny thing made me feel old today, and it’s NOT the arthritis part.

I had to see a hand surgeon today for a problem with one of my fingers. I have Psoriatic Arthritis which affects, among other things, the first joints behind the fingernails. He did X-Rays and told me I have “end-stage arthritis” in all my fingers. That essentially means there is no cartilage left between the bones and it can be very painful (I said, “I know, that’s why I’m here.”) My options for the finger that is currently hovering between “this really hurts and looks super red and swollen” and “I think I need to go to the ER right now!” are either a fusion surgery that would screw the joint together permanently, or get some sliver of relief by taping my fingers with a particular kind of tape in a specific way that he showed me. Oh, and of course drugs but I can’t take the mega-anti-inflammatories he suggested so I am going to go back to CBD from the local dispensary.

When he recommended the finger taping, I joked, “Oh! You mean like Michael Jackson?!” and he looked at me like I was an alien. He had no idea what I was talking about, but claimed to be a big MJ fan. I then had to explain to him that SOME OF US are old enough to remember when his finger taping was sort of a trademark. I told him to google it, and given that the surgeon looked about 40 years old, I felt like a fossil…a fossil with messed up joints.🤣
