This remarkable addition makes the most of the existing built fabric, referencing angles and forms from the old and matching material selection for a cohesive whole. The awkwardly-planned laundry and kitchen from a previous renovation have been demolished to create a new open plan kitchen/dining/ living space running almost full length across the block, maximising access to northern light. The new double-brick addition with large, double-glazed sliding doors opening onto a new deck and pool, with a new high-pitched roof riffing off the existing gable extension and providing open, flexible spaces for the young family.
As a reference to the angled fireplaces in the old cottage, the new triangular window seat provides excellent cross-ventilation and works with the elec-fired underfloor hydronic heating system (in the new concrete slab) for year-round comfort.
A 90’s extension has been completely altered to bring it kicking and screaming into the 20’s.

We’re a sustainability-driven design practice, where fun meets functional, and traditions are flipped on their head. We collaborate with clients and skilled tradespeople to create meaningful places and environmentally-focused ways of living and learning.

We see each project as a fresh dialogue, a chance to transform bright ideas into an elegant and well-detailed reality. We design renovations and new builds for flexibility; to foster focus, interaction, ideation and regenerative modes, adaptable to the task at hand.

A new fitout for the Architecture School at the University of Adelaide, and an internal refresh for the Arts & Humanities in two of the classic Modernist Buildings on the North Terrace Campus.

Works in the Barr Smith South level 5 included dividing the large studio spaces into smaller, more flexible learning space with robust and acoustically-treated new floor finishes and ceilings. Mobile fold-up furniture and new lighting make the spaces quickly rearrangeable for events and exhibitions.

A new AV system with a specialist online learning system and integrated lecterns bring the spaces up to a contemporary learning standard.
The Napier Improvement Plan included replacement of carpet across all levels of the multi-storey building with a focus on the main entry and lobby spaces, followed by teaching spaces and office accommodation.
Works were staged so the building could remain occupied.
Design features include new acoustic pinboard, upgraded seating and loose furniture.

When Ian Moffat and Anika Johnstone moved into their house in the tiny Adelaide suburb of Glandore in 2021, they gave their new home a name: Hortense. Guided by the principle of ‘just enough’, they saw Architect Jon Lowe’s work in Sanctuary, and contacted him to design sustainable, efficient, and flexible additions to their home.

Sustainability upgrades included a north-facing polished concrete slab for thermal mass, cross ventilation and high-level windows for night cooling, insulated brickwork and all-electric appliances to eliminate the gas supply. Hortense is one of 200 houses featuring in Sustainable House Day 2026.
