This is how I want my teams to play. Exploit wide areas get into the cut back zone for a simple tap in finish by @jonnychamaille

Does a coach really influence results?
Manchester United might be the clearest recent example.

Rúben Amorim struggled to get consistent results during his 14 months at United, managing to win three games in a row only once.
Michael Carrick, in contrast, achieved that in his first three matches.

On paper, both coaches arrived with relatively limited experience at the very top level. Amorim and his staff had worked mainly in Portugal at clubs like Braga and Sporting CP. Carrick’s coaching background was largely built in the Championship with Middlesbrough.

The key difference for me? The backroom staff.

Carrick’s appointment of Steve Holland has been massive.
Holland brings proven elite-level experience from Chelsea and the England national team under Gareth Southgate—and it shows.

Under Amorim, United were often easy to play through. Opponents regularly found space between the lines and ways to score.
Since Holland’s arrival, the changes are clear:

• A more compact team shape
• Smarter game management
• Pressing only when necessary
• Clear pressing triggers (poor touch, flat pass, backwards pass)

It’s a reminder that modern coaching isn’t just about the head coach’s ideas—it’s about the collective expertise behind them.
