Social media isn’t neutral. It’s a system built to optimize for engagement at all costs. The algorithm is basically a black box, even the people who build it don’t fully understand it. But what it does understand is how to push our psychological buttons.

It tests millions of little variations until it learns what makes us click, scroll, argue, or laugh just long enough to keep us hooked. It’s not designed to make us healthier, more connected, or more creative. It’s designed to keep our eyes on the screen. That means the levers it pulls are the ones that work quickest: fear, outrage, anxiety, envy, FOMO.

This is applied psychology at a mass scale, but with no guardrails. One on one, it would be considered manipulation or even abuse. But when it’s millions at once, we shrug it off. Slowly, it rewires how we think, what we value, and how we see ourselves all for someone else’s profit.

I don’t want to keep feeding that. I don’t want my art, my attention, or my friendships reduced to bait in an engagement trap. I’d rather step back, protect my peace, and build connection in ways that feel real.
