Working in sports, I get asked frequently what my "favorite memory" is. Well, here is my answer...sorry for the long story...

2022 Calder Cup Finals... Springfield, MA - I'd been working with the Chicago Wolves for 11 seasons...and I'd not yet been a part of a championship team, until then. Yet, the absolute favorite memory is not my own.

The Wolves own version of hockey royalty is a guy named Wendell Young. Wendell has won it all as a player (Memorial Cup, Turner Cup, Calder Cup and Stanley Cup). He also won a Calder Cup as a coach. But as a General Manager, he had not yet won a Cup. 12 seasons as a GM and the Cup had eluded him...until 2022. At the end of the 2022 season, Wendell finally got his Cup as a GM. In part, this was "Wendell's Cup"!

So what happens, the team gives him his moment...hoist your Cup Mr. GM! It was awesome! And in that moment, a memory I'll carry with me to the end. After all that, what does he do? He hands the Cup, his Cup, to a hockey crazed 13 year old who has been volunteering in the locker room for the past 4 seasons...my son, Justin Sata.

So much goes into winning a championship at any level of sport. Hard work, dedication, long hours, sweat, tears, joy....all of it. In that moment, the man who had worked his whole career to hoist the Cup as a GM, well, he shared his love for everything about the game that is pure, with a boy who has dreams of finding a career in hockey.
