Exhibit SpotlightOne of the newest additions to The Bone Museum is this diaphanized fetal specimen preserved in resin. Diaphanization, also known as clearing and staining, is a technique used in medical and anatomical research that renders soft tissues transparent while selectively staining bone and cartilage. This allows researchers, students, and clinicians to study skeletal development, congenital abnormalities, and anatomical relationships in remarkable detail without dissection.Preparations like this provide a rare glimpse into the complex process of human development and remain an important tool in anatomy, embryology, and comparative anatomy education. This specimen was prepared by Carolina Biological Supply Company, a U.S.-based scientific supplier and anatomical preparator known for producing educational specimens used in classrooms, laboratories, and museums across the country. by @jonsbones

Collection Spotlight: Anatomical Teaching SkullThis remarkable anatomical teaching skull has been meticulously carved and modeled to demonstrate the complex structures of the human head. By exposing and highlighting the muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and orbital anatomy, this preparation helps transform the skull from a static object into a visual map of the body’s architecture. by @jonsbones

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) causes muscles, tendons, and ligaments to gradually turn into bone, forming a second skeleton that restricts movement. Flare-ups can be triggered by minor injuries, leading to progressive joint fusion. In advanced stages, the body becomes almost completely immobilized. Carol Orzel, and Harry Eastlack’s skeletons at the @muttermuseum provide a rare and powerful example of this process. by @jonsbones

The jeweled skeleton of Saint Pancratius, displayed in Switzerland, tells a story far beyond its ornate appearance. A young Roman martyr, his remains were later exhumed and transformed into a baroque relic, blending faith, art, and history into one striking display. by @jonsbones

Collection Spotlight: Demonstration Skull with Porotic HyperostosisThis demonstrative skull in The Bone Museum’s collection shows classic porous expansion across the cranial vault, consistent with porotic hyperostosis, a condition often associated with chronic anemia or other physiological stress during life. Pieces like this help us understand how systemic disease can leave lasting signatures on bone, turning the skeleton into a record of lived experience, health, and hardship. At The Bone Museum, we preserve and study specimens like this to make osteology and medical history more accessible to the public. 🦴 by @jonsbones

One of the rarest and most remarkable pieces we have ever added to our collection is this skull showing severe craniofacial deformity. Visible features include a cleft palate, nasal dysplasia, and signs consistent with craniosynostosis. While our forensic anthropology team is still working toward a more definitive diagnosis, we wanted to share this extraordinary piece of medical history. What makes a specimen like this so powerful is that it is more than just pathology, it represents a real person who lived an entire life. As we continue to study this skull more closely, we hope to gain deeper insight not only into the condition itself, but also into the individual behind it and the possible life they may have lived. by @jonsbones
