🏁 These were the goals: slap together a sub-2hr showing, stay upright, and don’t. stop. running. It had been years.

In short: success. At length: I pounded the ground at a ~9min/mile pace, relished in a playlist of faves, gamified the whole thing by choosing ppl to chase (until I passed my prey or they took off 💁🏻‍♂️), and … disassociated when needed. 😶‍🌫️

Nearly perfect distance-race weather. 👌🏼 A jog to the starting line with friends. 😵‍💫 So many poignant and chuckle-y signs along the way that I can’t even remember. A sprint finish on my last batch of energy. 🥴 And an NA brew after the fact like a good bro.

Not bad at all for having the flu a few weeks ago and being undertrained in this year of turning 45. 👨🏻 This was my slowest time in ~10 half-marathons, and I was thrilled. Thanks to @joshuaowen for beckoning me to “go run” somedays, and thanks to @haruki_murakami_ and Ben Ratliff for their reads on the running-meets-music mindset. 💡

Color me glad – schweaty, salty, and stubborn. 😅 Now back to my beloved tennis and fooling myself into chasing balls. At the end of the day, we’re not so elevated from the beasts. 🐕

The last of my grands. Gma is gone now, and a piece of my heart with her. But my hope is that some of the best slivers of her character, charm and more attributes reside in me. It may be that I’ve never felt so gutted and relieved at the same time in my life. She knows no pain. 🤍

She played the piano from her soul, sans sheet music, at Thanksgiving. She turned 94 on December 2. She loved line dancing, crossword puzzles, playing at church, “real” country music (read: the classic stuff), FaceTime and emoji, and engaging in witty banter. She loved, and was loved.

I loved and will miss verbally volleying with her, hugging her tiny body, and just sitting and abiding alongside her. There’s something to be said for a good sit.

Marlene Geier, I hope you’ve got command of some kind of celestial keyboard. 🎹 You could tickle the keys with ease and love and tickle friends and family with a good quip just the same. Now the rest of my existence will be a tribute to you. taken in LaOtto, Indiana by @jonscott9

Gma turned 94 a few days after Thanksgiving, at which time she sported a sweater I wanted to steal 🩵; tickled the ivories from memory, hearing and feel (read: soul) over a solid dozen songs 🎹; and said, when I asked for a pic, “Why would you want to be seen with this old broad?” 🙃
