Built through accumulation, response, and revision, @jonsyme paintings emerge through dense layers of pigment. Communities of colour gather, disperse, intersect, and collide, suggesting flowers, root systems, weather, horizons, and imagined landscapes. Suspended between becoming and undoing, the works invite reflection on our interconnectedness, where the microscopic and the cosmic echo one another.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to view Jonathan Syme’s ‘Field Conditions’, you’re in luck—we’re extending the exhibition through early August.

Portraits, especially self-portraits, are elusive at best. Yet, every painting is, in some way, just that.
These paintings are made with the intention of reflection. They present as a version of portrait, a locating of the self within a greater context. Jonathan Syme’s exhibition, Field Conditions, reflects on a state of relation. The field is not a place but a condition — a living continuum in which every element exists through its connection to another.

In that spirit, during Frieze Week Los Angeles, we are proud to present “With Glowing Hearts: Canadian Abstraction Now”. Hi all, it’s been a while… I’m very happy to be part of this show during @frieze in Los Angeles. It’s @royaleprojects and I’m showing with some real beauties! @ken__lum @jonsyme @anniebriard and more!!

An artist whose sculptural paintings feel alive with movement, where colours meet, merge, and interrupt each other, Lila’s “Pink Alpine” cocktail is a nod to Syme’s work, displayed at the corner of King Edward and Main, made with Montolobos Mezcal, Dry Orange Curaçao, Lime, Spiced Hibiscus Syrup, and Vegan Foam.

Jonathan Syme’s sculptural paintings explore materiality through tactile surfaces, bold colour, and dynamic tension. His compositions engage abstraction as a process, layering impasto gestures with stains, erasures, and scraping to create works that feel simultaneously constructed and intuitive. Colours commune, intersect, and disrupt each other, often within a single brushstroke, evoking movement and continual transformation. Central to Syme’s practice is the dedicated frame—hand-built and painted in unconventional hues—which act, not as boundary, but extension. This dialogue between frame and field blurs tradition and innovation, amplifying the energy between precision and spontaneity, containment and expansion within each work. by @jonsyme
