When “I could eat” becomes urgent and hungry becomes hangry, might we suggest these in-between-bites and flavor-packed snacks? Chef-owner Melissa Perello discovered our shop years ago, after a hunt for Urfa Biber led her to us. Her restaurant Octavia’s take on a “Devil’s Egg” features a jammy center and plenty of Eastern Mediterranean Spice, highly recommended with a side of crusty bread for dipping. We are so excited to welcome Flour + Water to our community! They opened their first Oakland outpost last year, and their Grand Lake Shake wings have been a staple on the menu ever since. Kampot Peppercorns are the star of Michelin-mentioned Nite Yun’s Khmer Fried Chicken. Just looking at these crackly-craggy-crunchy-wings, studded with peppercorns, makes us want to hop on the ferry to seek them out. Grand Lake Kitchen has been our neighbor-besties for nearly 14 years! These juicy Lamb Merguez meatballs feature a smoky-savory pistachio Salsa Macha chile oil. We may or may not grab a plate on our lunch break. TAROCCO is our Berkeley warehouse team’s favorite lunch spot for flavor-packed salads. Their bright purple charred cabbage transforms lunch into art, and lunch-al-desko into something worth celebrating. Joodooboo is a tofu and banchan shop in North Oakland serving fresh dooboo and hyper-seasonal veggies. They’re featuring our Vadouvan dusted atop crispy-fried tofu this October like it’s 2010 again. Umami architects Yoko and Kayoko are serving up bowls of Sesame Miso Shake popcorn at their sake bar this October, the perfect pairing for our two collab cocktails also on the menu. Sarah Kasai is not someone who abides in moderation. She lives, works, eats french fries, and loves her dearests with an uncommon tenacity.  And that brand of loyalty and fierceness has helped shape the shop through some of its hardest days and periods of success.  Her love for vegetables and fruits, fermentation, and delicious things have helped keep our kimchi and banchan on a constant upward slope of improvement, and her love of all things cute have helped keep the shop vibes on point.  Our crew has been working hard to prepare for her departure over the last two months– folks have been stepping into roles with greater responsibility and new members have joined the team to help carry the outsized portion of work that she’s managed.  Thanks to the crew and Sarah putting in the work to ensure our systems (largely built by Sarah) and bases are covered, the shop will continue in good stride in her absence, but no matter- I’m going to miss my friend.  If you have any warm feelings towards the shop, it’s important to know that Joodooboo and those feelings are largely furnished by the love, blood, sweat and tears of a wonderful human.  Come by this week to give her hugs and flowers. Cut fruit tastes like love. A quiet but special presence on our menu are the seasonal fruits we offer on our sets. Traditionally Korean elders lovingly cut fruit as an offering of care for children or a host might have a sliced plate of fruit to welcome you to their home. We want to share that love and hospitality with you! Summer is hangin’ on here in the shop! Right now our seasonal soup that accompanies our Banchan Set is a chilled corn with sun-dried Jolly tomatoes and charred chicories. 🌽🍅 The set is complete with a precious slice of a variety of apple called Ashmead’s Kernel from our friends at @devoto_orchards. Ashmead’s Kernel is Stan Devoto’s favorite varietal that they grow. It’s tart and crisp, like drinking a nice glass of wine with a long finish. 🍎🥂 After making Banchan we send all of our veggie scraps as well as our soybean pulp to feed these beauties at @gohyang_fields look at that perfect curly tail! 🐷🫛 Swipe for this week’s BanChan menu. This week we Just Really Wanted To Do Something With Quince so we played around with poaching, threw in some charred briney Romaine and smokey Trumpet Mushrooms from SunHee, and topped it all off with shallots so crispy it might as well be ASMR.
