My Tio Detroit was known as the best diesel mechanic in Santa Ana, which is how he acquired the nickname “Detroit” (after Detroit Diesel)
He wasn’t my direct uncle. Detroit is the son of my great grandmothers brother. His real name was Rafael, and the family called him Lito.
He grew up amidst the bubbling tension of El Salvador’s civil war, eventually joining the guerrillas with his brothers and cousins. It was typical for guerrillas to hide among the mountains and vegetation of El Salvador. Multiple of our relatives were bombed and killed as they rebelled against the tyrannical government backed by the United States. These vibrant forests now cradle the dead, entire bloodlines erased, “disappeared” people.
Detroit’s nickname amongst the guerrillas was “Negro” in reference to his dark skin. Detroit was killed in the war. To my knowledge, he was highly respected among his comrades.
One morning his family awoke to this message painted on the wall of Detroit’s auto-shop:
“Mother, We fell like seeds in the fight. The harvest, your brave sons. Mom, your living blood was great. Detroit, a prayer for you. Comrade, no bells rang, Our rifles sang to you A hymn of peace with love and freedom
Negro, you earned heaven.
Salute - Lucas”
As far as I know, no one ever found out who Lucas was. Unfortunately, Detroit was one of tens of thousands of Salvadorans who were murdered during the civil war. I am honored to share the same bloodline as Detroit. He is a martyr. by @joomblee
