Turpan, in eastern Xinjiang, is a Silk Road oasis known as China’s “Grape City.” It lies in the Turpan Depression, where extreme summer heat, long sunshine, large day-night temperature swings, and karez irrigation create ideal grape-growing conditions. Its grape history spans about 2,300 years. Today, Turpan has over 630,000 mu of vineyards and more than 550 varieties. The Seedless White grape dominates, accounting for 90–95% of local production and earning the name “green pearl of China.”

Harvest runs from August to October, peaking in August. Fresh grapes are sold across China and abroad; in 2025, fresh sales exceeded 500,000 tons, earning 2.1 billion yuan. Other grapes are dried in ventilated brick drying houses, producing sweet raisins. Turpan processes about 220,000 tons of raisins annually, and more than 90% of China’s raisins come from here. The city also has 42 wineries and holds three national geographical indications: Turpan Grapes, Raisins, and Wine. The annual Turpan Grape Festival and Grape Valley attract visitors to taste grapes, stay in homestays, and enjoy Uyghur music and dance under the vines. For Turpan, the grape harvest is both ancient tradition and vital livelihood. It remains central to local identity, economy, and a celebrated tourist experience.

The best-known legend of the Moon Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) is “Chang’e Flying to the Moon” (嫦娥奔月).

Long ago, there were ten suns in the sky. They scorched the earth and made life unbearable. A great archer named Hou Yi shot down nine of them, leaving only one sun. As a reward, the Queen Mother of the West gave him an elixir of immortality.

Hou Yi loved his wife, Chang’e, and did not want to leave her, so he asked her to keep the elixir safe. But on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, while Hou Yi was away, a wicked man named Feng Meng tried to steal it. To stop him, Chang’e swallowed the elixir herself. She became light and flew up to the moon, where she has lived ever since.

When Hou Yi returned, he was heartbroken. He looked up at the moon and saw a shadow that looked like Chang’e. He set out her favorite foods and fruits as an offering. Later, people followed his example, gazing at the moon and praying to Chang’e for peace, reunion, and good fortune. This is why the Mid-Autumn Festival is associated with family reunion, moon gazing, and mooncakes.

Other Moon Festival legends include:

· The Jade Rabbit: A rabbit sacrificed itself to feed three hungry immortals. Moved by its kindness, they sent it to the moon, where it pounds the elixir of life.
· Wu Gang and the Cassia Tree: An immortal was punished to chop a magical self-healing tree on the moon forever.
· Mooncake Uprising: During the Yuan dynasty, secret messages were hidden inside mooncakes to plan a rebellion, which helped lead to the Ming dynasty.

So the Moon Festival celebrates the moon, reunion, and the bittersweet story of Chang’e and Hou Yi.

Merdeka Square, officially known as Dataran Merdeka, is the historical heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Originally a colonial cricket pitch for the Royal Selangor Club, it gained historic significance at midnight on August 31, 1957, when the British Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag was raised for the first time, signaling national independence. Today, a 95-meter flagpole—one of the tallest in the world—marks this milestone. Surrounded by iconic heritage landmarks like the Moorish-style Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the square remains a vibrant symbol of freedom and serves as a main venue for annual national parades and civic gatherings.
